my car is all stock and was thinking about going n/a or fi. Having trouble choosing. I would definetly turbo it if I know it can handle it.
Its a 97 328is with 180k.
What would be some things to check cause I dont want to blow the engine.
any feedback would be appreciated from people who hve done this or people who know it would be safe

You add 1hp or 1000hp, you add stress to the components. Components wich are on their way out will fail earlier with more stress on them (agressive driving or extra torque). If you don't want to deal with that, sell it and buy a new car, if you can deal with it, throw some boost on that bitch!
Do a compression and leak down test.
If it checks out, stick a turbo on it.

Leak down test compression test needs be done to see the health of your motor if it fails rebuild it for either n/a or fi if it's good then by all means turbo it!!!

No guarantees on a 15 year old motor with 180k. Doubling stock horsepower and torque will expose all weaknesses. It is also tremendous fun.
Don't do it unless you are willing to accept the risks. There is a 328i local to me with about 300k miles and a Technica Stage 2 kit, but not many miles on it since the conversion from supercharger to turbocharger. And a lot less fun.
People turbo high mileage motors regularly, usually with a lower compression headgasket. But adding 30 naturally aspirated horsepower would be a lot less stressful than adding 150 turbo horsepower.

Not to thread jack but what would be a minimum compression and leak down numbers. I'm going to be testing mine shortly to see if its healthy enough for 14 pounds of boost.
