Do all F30's have the half-ipad wedged into the dashboard or is that optional?

I don't think it is bad at all. I like how it pops without being obtrusive. If it is not flattering look at the A4 dash... How cheesy is that...

Mine has a cowling over it and it's there all the time, it doesn't pop up.

That's because you do not have an F30.

What he's telling you is that your 2012 335i coupe is the last E90. Basically, you purchased a car in the last year of its design cycle. The redesigned coupe comes in 2013 and will be called the new 4 series.
This is why your car has a different/old model interior.
Still a very nice ride though
