Can you put a wastegate in the downpipe (off the downpipe) if you're cramped for space?

huh?
the wastegate inlet needs to be sourced from PRE turbo, then the outlet is to anywhere in the exhaust post turbo.

You can certainly discharge the wastegate into the main exhaust, and thus locate the wastegate remotely from the turbo and very close to the main exhaust. But the entry to the wastegate must come from a pre-turbo header or manifold source since it vents exhaust gas before it gets to the turbo to limit turbo spool.
Because space is tight, especially on bottom mount turbos on these cars, most people run a separate, 1.5 to 2.0 inch wastegate pipe from the turbo header or manifold to a wastegate about 18-24 inches away, near the main exhaust, and discharge in to the main exhaust. This works well. Top mount turbos may have more space options. A wastegate nearer the manifold or header would be ideal, but the remote ones seem to work very well.
For smaller turbos, there are turbine housings with integrated wastegates -- little flapper valves in the back of the turbine housing where the main exhaust connects. This is an economical form of wastegating and is very compact, but naturally has limited capacity. Many factory turbos use this form of wastegate. I'd guess you would be limited to about 350 hp since the wastegate hole is typically about 1 inch (though people have ported them a little bigger).

My WG is routed from the exhaust manifold down by the frame rail. Then the exit is plumbed to the exhaust. Here is a photo out of the car. As stated, the WG has to be mounted pre-turbo.

It's from TRM but the WG pipe was custom made.
