Hi Guys:

Looking to potentially purchase a 1992 M5 w/ 82,000 miles, very good shape and records... what would you say is a good number to offer?

Thx!

Post a bit more info about it so the pros can give you their bet opinion... Any rust? Recent maintenance history? Has the car been sitting? any current problems? Paint? Interior ?...ect...

You've gotta have meticulous records on that S38 or have a PPI done on it by a reputable place that knows M's.

1992 M5? easily $20k

:)

Jk... salvage title '92 M5... hrm, $5000 maybe

But what people need to realize with cars these old... they are worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for them and not a penny more.

In my opinion having a salvage title is really just a negotiation point on an older car. If you're not purchasing the car as an investment it really doesn't matter. Actually would conditionally prefer a salvage car over one that had the pee ran out of it on track days. Plus, it doesn't take much to total these cars as they age. A minor bump in the back will often total one. Best to get some facts as to what the circumstances of the salvage title were before writing it off as a bad purchase.

I bought a 1988 M3 for $4k a few years back with a salvage title. I contacted the owner when it was wrecked and he said some chick ran a stop light and took out the right front. He thought it wasn't all that bad but the insurance company totaled it anyway. I bought it 18 months later looking pretty pimpy with chrome Momo wheels. I changed the wheels, removed the loud stereo, straightened out the security system wiring and sold it in Roundel for $8k the day that issue hit the street. Wish I still had it because you seldom see one for less than $10k now no matter what the miles. I expect the E34 M5 will follow that trend.

I agree, people make way too much out of salvage titles. It could also be a theft recovery that was payed off and then found with nothing wrong with it. My daughters 540 was totaled for very minor damage that i could have fixed for less than 200.00. Everyone assumes the car was crunched with frame damage..

And rightfully so. A salvage title isn't to indicate that the car is crap. It's to indicate that there was an issue with the car where the insurance company decided it was too expensive to fix and was paid out on as a total loss. It could have been a cracked/bent/compromised frame or it could have been hail damage. However, the important part is to know that SOMETHING happened to it that resulted in it being TOTALED. I think in some states it's actually illegal to register and drive a salvage titled vehicle, and as such it's to be used "for parts" only. So, it absolutely is something people should assume is due to catastrophic damages because then you will receive what you expect. If it ends up being that the subframe was bent and it was bought back by the owner and replaced then great. But...
