They illuminate, but that's about it. They were intermittent with this problem for the longest time, but now neither side will flash or "interrupt." They just stay on. Any ideas? I have to manually actuate to "flash" them.

the flasher module is under the steering column cover. Right near the ignition switch. Not too difficult to remove. Mine was not working on my car, worked fine once I swapped in a spare I had.

Check the flasher itself or your hazard switch

Agree with Bert here. With that problem I'd check the flasher relay 1st. The turn signals do go through the hazard switch. Found out once that with the hazard switch out that you'll have no signals.

Ok Bert you were right. Turns out the hazard switch just stays on with no flashing. Never thought to even check that. So what do I do now? Is it a bad relay? If so which one is it? Do I need to get under the steering column for this or is it in the relay panel under the hood? Thanks in advance. I'd really like to fix this week.

It is in the steering column. Here is how to replace it:

BMW wants $42 ($33 at a discount!) for this flasher! ..... Just one thing though ....

Took one in last year to my local independent Import Auto Parts store, and the owner took one look at the pin numbers on the bottom (31, 49, 49a) and informed me that it was a standard Bosch flasher configuration and gave me one used on the VW ($6). The case was a slightly different size but fit fine under the column and works fine, so you should be able to find one locally.
(The e12 based cars I believe have a 4 pin flasher and are different)

AutoHaus doesn't show a flasher in it's menu driven listings, but if you do a parts search for the flasher (61311371907) it cross-references to this:

Meyle/Wehrle ($5.95)
Hazard Warning Relay; Flasher/Turn Signal with 3 Prong Connector

CW6er you're pretty much a one stop shop here. Thanks so much!

It was the flasher relay under the steering column. $7.00. So nice to have working flashers again!
