View Full Version : The BMW "Stereotype"

As we all know, there are __ types of people on the road when it comes to BMW. The people that fell in love with the cars and became enthusiasts, the ones that bought one but could really care less about the cars, the ones that bought one and had a bad experience so they stay away from the brand in the future, and the ones that don't have one because they're too scared of maintenance or sticker prices. Although the most notorious would have to be the ones that have the stereotype of a BMW owner being a complete jerk who cuts people off, swerves between lanes and is just a pain to be around. From my experience as a BMW owner I have to say that stereotype is totally unfounded.
I recently heard this joke about BMW owners and thought I would post "What's the difference between a BMW and a porcupine? The Porcupine has the pricks outside." Anyways that made me laugh and wonder, how many of you have encountered people who have had that stereotype of you.
Just thought this was funny

The same exact paragraph can be said about Mercedes Benz owners (which I also am.) My friend was riding with me yesterday and he goes wow your not driving like all the other Benz guys who swerve and cut everyone off.

With the older models becoming more affordable your gonna see younger guys/girls in them who probably shouldnt be. Wanna be gangsters and guys who think their hardcore and drive like douchbags. Makes the rest of us look bad but what can ya do. I see a lot of people who shouldnt be driving these cars, or any car for that matter.

At the dealership we see alot of different stereotypical BMW owners. There are the `social climbers`(the ones who have just `made` it, typically 323 owners, sorry to those of you who don`t fall into this category). Social climbers have just put out a second mortgage or are broke because they had to have the status of a BMW, but couldn`t really afford it, they demand respect and special treatment because they drive a BMW, and bicker about any repair they are quoted and start to believe BMW`s are bad vehicles because repairs can be costly and sometimes frequent (complex machines, not happy with it, buy a toyota). There are the ones who have truly made it (the ones driving new M cars, 550i`s or 7`s), who will do whatever the technician recommends for his car because they know without consistent maintenance there cars will depreciate and turn into a lemon, and of course, they can afford it. The enthusiast (they can drive any BMW, whether they can afford it or not they dish out the cash for the repairs), these are my favorite of BMW owner, they understand to keep their cars running well and working in original order it will require a bit of blood and sweat. But they still love the marque, and can tell you stories about the history of their car and why they will always stick with BMW.
I just had a mental block, there are more, but thats all I can think of right now.. But it is all (sometimes unfortunately, sometimes not so much) true.
And I agree there are some dick BMW drivers out there, but the same goes for any fine marque of automobile. Alot of people in expensive cars, or prestigious brands just think they have to show off or have something to prove. Its a shame..

^ That sounds about dead on. It doesn't take long talking with a BMW owner to tell if they are and enthusiast or someone that bought the car as a prestige symbol.

Have listened for years to "Click and Clack" on PBS radio on Saturday mornings. Looking like a fool laughing to myself while driving. If you don't know these guys they are Garage owners who provide information and humor on car issues to callers.
Once they had the discussion on whether or not BMW drivers where the worst. After years of claiming such was the case, they decided that VW Jetta drivers were the scourge of the road. Because "they want a BMW, but can only afford a Jetta".

The good old stereotypes! It's funny that I tumbled upon this. I'm a younger guy, 17 years old. I got a BMW 325i e36 as my second car. I've always had a thing for German made cars, so when I got the chance to own a BMW I got right on it! People assume that the kid driving a BMW is a spoiled daddy's boy, and that's not me! All though I do like to drive fast and put bad drivers in in my dust whenever I encounter them, I'm not a spoiled rich kid. There's a certain feeling you get when your car continually puts a smile on your face. I'll own a BMW one after another and I will never complain!
I've never had a BMW, but will have an e36 M3 soon if things go according to plan. I've always felt just a little bit too happy when it was my turn to cut off a BMW. But I've been paying more attention lately, and I don't really see the stereotype that much. Almost all the BMWs have boring old men/women in them and are driving passively in the middle lane. The bad/aggressive drivers are all driving arbitrary cars. Or pickup trucks with NH plates....

As a vehicle itself, I respect and mildly enojoy most BMW's. Most owners around here (especially the ones under 30 years old) are douchebags. There are exceptions of course...the ones who care most about handling, balance, refinement, etc...but those people are few and far between.
Most casual BMW drivers and people who call themselves enthusiasts are much more concerned with style than substance. They care an awful lot about trying to look cool. The younger type are the most annoying. They are the type to wear their sunglasses indoors, etc. Way too many cars ruined by being "stanced" and "hellaflush" etc. The older ones bought a BMW for "status", only to realize that it makes no difference - there are tons of BMW's out there.
I'd say 70% of BMW drivers are asshats. The other 30% are true enthusiasts and really don't care what other people think of them or their car.

All car makes have bad owners and good owners, but the perception of BMW owners tends towards the pricks. I don't care, let people think what they want.

We see all kinds at the dealership I work for. And yeah, you can tell the enthusiast vs the badge seeker. The enthusiast talks to you on your level, they know what they're talking about, they know what they want and what to expect...and they know what they drive.
The badge seeker is the opposite, they talk above you, because that's how they think they are in the general status of life, they have no clue what they're talking about or what they want, many times they don't even know what they drive. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "I have a BMW"...what year sir?..."heck I don't know...2000-2002...something like that."..."what model?"..."it's a 300 series I think"
The worst...and here comes the vehicle stereotype...are the E38 owners. They bought the biggest turd on the planet for $1200 and are blown out of the water when it comes time to repair that "oil leak"...they want to beat you down on price, they grumble and complain...yadda yadda yadda.
Or the ones that bring their car in for service, we do the job and then they go over the car with a fine toothed comb and find any little thing on the interior that had nothing to do with the job we did and complain that we "broke something"...and it goes all the way up the chain to the big dogs and we have to buy them a door panel. Those last two are the "porcupine customers"

Far less than thirty percent. One percent of BMW owners are enthusiasts... Even so called enthusiasts just drive it because it's a bimmer. Especially in Los Angeles.

I like the Bimmer 'Posers" who get their cars for social reasons. The more of them there are, the more good used cars they will be. With there so many of them, it is much easier to zoom around town without getting too much attention, Finally, if one of their well-dressed, well-made up women wants to go out with me, I can handle that,

Now I don't often get outside of Columbus OH. But around here, all it takes to look like an idiot on the road is to simply be an idiot. Maybe it's a regional thing. Anyway, had BMW never come to be, would there really be less d-bags in the world?
Sorry, fallacious logic is a peeve of mine.

I live in a community no sidewalks and narrow roads.
People usually fly by like crazy .
When i walk my dog I have to be all the way in a ditch or else id get ran over.
And there is that one E36 M3 ( or it looks like m3 ) that sounds supercharged really nice car.
He is THE ONLY guy that slows down and moves almost all the way to the other side of the road . no matter if its noon or midnight.
I didn't see him speed once in a community
so to the guy in Winona lakes THANKS !
On the other hand coming from the country that has mental disorder when it comes to bmw's ( with good reasons btw)
I can see why so many people think bmw owners are pricks

Are there more D-Bags? Pretentious wannabes are everywhere, present company excepted. The question is what would they be driving? Tuner cars? Lowend Mercedes and Porsches? You can see why th if there were no BMWey end up with BMWs-the combination of class, fun to drive and creature comforts really can't be matched.
I am still very entertained by the wannabe wannabes with a coffee can-sized exhaust tip on a 1.6 '89 Honda.

I believed this sterotype to be true, until I went of my first bmw run. I literally told the guys I thought they were going to be a bunch of D-bags. I was completely wrong.

Around here I don't find that stereotype to be entirely true, its mostly just older people who drive the BMWs and mind their own business for the most part. The D-bag community around here are the Camaro and Mustang drivers (even though I currently fall into the Mustang driver category, I try to avoid being the tool).
