I just bought a 2006 325xi. I needed to get a spare key made for a remote starter. When I went to the dealership for the key, they said BMW does not offer remote starters and they STRONGLY recommeded against one, becuase it could damage the electrical system. Does anyone have any info on remote starters in 2006 or newer BMW's. Do you think it was the dealership over reacting, or is there a legitimate concern?
Thanks

Your are going to need to keep a key in the car at all times(EWS), the key has and internal battery that needs to be charged which only charges in the slot, and i'd imagine you'd be hacking into the harness to the CAS. All around not worth potential problems it may cause.

Thanks - I already have spare key, so that loss is no big deal. I would have the remote starter installed professionally. Would love the feature for hot summer and cold winter days. I did it on last (1998 BMW) but 2006 seems much more complicated electrically. Just fearful to hurt electric system somehow.

I really wouldn't do it. I have seen it done before. They took a spare key, and used black electrical tape and taped it up under the dash somewhere, and hacked up all kinds of wiring. I'd really advise against it. It's not worth the headache that it will most likely cause.

WOW - 0 for 2, you guys are getting me nervous. I would think that someplace like Atlanta, it would almost be a necessity in summer.

Use the parked car ventillation system... no remote started required.

I never heard of the parked car ventilation system? How does that cool the car, when its 90 outside and the leather seats are hot?

The leather seats are always going to be hot unless you have the car on and running for a substantial amount of time. Check to see if your car as the parked car ventillation system which essentially starts the fan motor and move hot interior air out the vents of the car.

Excellent, will do, thanks - I hope I do have parked ventilation. That will help in summer. Winter is manageable with heated seats.
