seatbelt help

I'm am in the process of putting my car back together and I am stuck on the rear seatbelts, the reels are almost fully wound up and I don't know how to release them to extend the belts out again, they are just locked up, I looked around and couldn't find any information nor am I able to access the bentley because my laptop is broken. It's a 92 535i sedan any help would be appreciated

The belt assemblies have to be perfectly vertical to let slack out. That is what makes them tighten under hard braking or acceleration.
