Have had a brake upgrade planned for my E24, using the E34 540 brakes, as per the following summary:
http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Upgrade/Brakes.htm
Finally found a 540 in a wrecking yard, starting taking off the calipers, and then noticed:
-Front was 302mm x 22mm, not 302 x 28mm
-Rear was un-vented 300 x 10, not the vented 300 x 20.
Sounds like the setup from a 525, 530, 535 rather than a 540.
Does anybody know if earlier 540's came with this spec brakes? Either thats the case, or this car was re-badged. Don't see much point in upgrading to this setup, may as well wait for another 540 or E32 setup to become available.

Probably re-badged, or swapped to the smaller brakes for some reason. I'm not aware of any 540's using the smaller brakes, but I don't know everything about euro and RHD versions. I agree, I would wait to find the ones you really want.

The 540 should have the 300mm x 20mm rear disc

I sold a ton of these brake upgrades literally and run the rear 540 on the rear of my M5. However, the 530 and 540 run the same brake diameter and same pad...Only difference is a thicker vented rotor which adds more ...weight. The only time the thicker vent will help is when the brakes are HOT...I would suggest that esp in the rear, you would never see a difference in braking between the 530 and 540, just my nickel's worth of thought, which might be worth that even ;)

+1 on 525 rears. I've run these for 6 years on Steve's advice.
More than adequate. I've not run into heat issues in the rears on track. They use the same pads --E36 M3.
