View Full Version : Okay to install tint with auto-dimming mirrors?

I have a 2008 528xi with auto-dimming mirrors (side-view and rear view). I would like to install 30% tint on my 4 side windows and rear window. Would this cause the auto-dimming mirrors function to not work correctly? I am not sure if the sensor for all 3 auto-dimming mirrors is right below the rear-view mirror or what. I just like the way the tinted windows look, along with keeping the leather a bit cooler in the summer. Any thoughts/opinions?

Thanks,

Jeff

Auto-dimming will be effected some-what, as they will turn on and off earlier than no tint.

I don't have any regrets though, I love it.

Technically it should not affect it. Since your windows will be darker, not as much light will get to them so the tint will not get as dark. This would probably be a desired feature.

anyone know what about on a coupe with the windows that go down the quarter of an inch anytime you open the door? I am worried about that, my tint guy said no problem, just figured i would ask.

You could always pull the power window fuse for a couple days while the tint "sets up". I've had to do that before to keep my wife from accidentally rolling the windows down prematurely.

Good point, i usually put tape over it so no one forgets...

I guess it depends where the sensor is. The main cause for the 3 mirrors dimming, is normally because of headlights behind me. If there is only 1 sensor for all 3, and it is below my rear-view mirror, then the mirrors should technically not dim because less light is getting through the tint to the rear-view mirror sensor.

I just want to be able to see my side view mirrors when I am driving at night. I don't want to have to look through 30% tint and then dimmed side view mirrors as well.

if you pull the fuse for the windows they will not drop down or go up depending on if the door is opened or closed when you pull the fuse.

if the window is in full uprite position when you pull the fuse they can break and also scratch the hell out of the trim around the top of door on body. as long as they tint guy gets the window tint below the rubber seal along bottom of the window there is little damage that can happen. get car tinted on a friday and leave car sit for the weekend with out touching it. I think 24-48 hrs is all it needs to set up.

True, if you were also tinting the front side windows. I'm not planning to do that, as it is illegal in California. So, my worry is that the darker tint on the back window will "fool" the sensor into not dimming the two outside mirrors.

It looks as though the OP has the exact opposite concern that I have, that being that his outside mirrors will continue to dim, which will make them too dark through his tint.
