Had a quick question for the Bimmer Forum members here and I know the replies will vary but wanted to hear from those who would like to weigh in with thier comments on this. I am in the market for a Used 7 Series BMW, I am not a big fan of the E65/E66 Styling cues, and would like to hold out for a 2009 F01. As is typical, there is a big difference in price on an '08 E65 vs an '09 F01. My question to the forum fans here is this: Is the depreciation price drop simply when we roll into a New Calendar Year? Or is it based more upon when the newer cars roll off the production line and start hitting dealerships? Hard to phrase but, another way to take a stab at it is this: If one were to guess, when can I get that that F09 vehicle that's out there currently hovering at $55-$65k for more like $40-$50k comparable to the prices the E65's are going for now. I have tried looking around on some Auto Sites looking for a Bar Graph Chart that shows the depreciation price points month after month but so far have not found "The" Chart. Comments appreciated!

Thanks!

This is a totally uneducated guess, but I'd assume it's more when the next model year is available. If the calendar year switches yet the new models aren't out, it wouldn't make much sense for prices to drop on the last years yet. I'd expect it would need people actively moving away from the previous generation to the newer one first.

But then, that's just a guess *shrug*

Well lets put it this way. When we sold my mom's 2007 750Li the other day we lost 15k in depreciation after 2 years of ownership. So, not much longer. lol

Granted it was the old generation, but 7er don't hold their value too well. Not many people want them used (Outside of enthusiasts that is).

Yeah 7 series tank in value in the first year or two, it's a car everyone leases and returns. I'd say the first two-year leases will be returned to lots soon and CPOed, so keep an eye out!

Dont forget demand. With todays economy and gas prices, big cars with big engines lose value fast. Remember the time people traded in their suv when UncleSam offered money towards a new vehicle?

10 years ago, 1/3 of the vehicles on the road were suvs, now you rarely see them. I rarely see 7 series bmw or a 500-600 Benz now days and i live in a highly populated area.

Now 20 years ago, a 600 series Benz would drop its value by $10k as soon as you drove it of the dealer lot.

It's painful to see a guy tear up $30,000 for such little utility.
Man, can't you learn to love the E65?
They are virtually UNSELLABLE. You'll get a great price.

What about getting a 1998-2001?
You can find one that is mint, and get it for almost free.
You can plow $10k or more into it and fixed/prevent almost everything.

$2000 and looks great.

They drop fast my dad had a 2003 760li with 50k miles he ended up selling it for 15K these cars just cant hold value I think he paid about 40-50k in 2010 when he bought it..

I think its because they do horrible on gas mileage and no one wants bad mpgs cars

When the new gen rolls around is your answer... in my research the price of these cars are like stepping stones in the used car market e36 will be $2-4k cheaper than a comparable e46 and that $4-6k cheaper than a comparable e90

Same with the 7er but the gaps will be larger n obviously the current gen occupying top spot on the market... You will have to wait for an LCI or the next gen to get your price

One thing to consider though, is that the current 740, is possibly going to be one of the more reliable 7s built in a long time. Sharing its engine with the 3 and the 5, you won't have to worry about maintaining an expensive V8 or V12.

GF's dad has one, and got to take it to Vegas last year, and I have to say,it is an awesome car all around. I was not a fan of the e65/66s at all, but the F01 is a great car all around. Decent pickup, and believe it or not, pretty decent on the fuel efficiency in terms of highway. We were getting something like 26~ mpg average. This was all highway though.

I am sure the electronics in the car are going to be burning a few pant pockets, but at least the engine is not going to break the bank as badly.

Even at that, the costs are still going to be up there. I'd try to get an aftermarket warranty....maybe go through Carmax. I know they offer cheap warranties on the vehicles they sell.

Yeah its going to be bad, but I would imagine a v12 or v8 would be worse heh
