I have been planning to make million mile road trip. First problem for this trip is selecting car. What do you think would be best BMW model for the trip? I would also like to know your opinions why BMW would be best car for that.

I have been driving BMW since I got my driving license, so I just love BMW, but I really don't know why it would be best for the trip. There are several requirements for the chosen car:
-Sometimes car will need some repairing, so it would be nice if there would be official service places all over the world
-model must be as comfortable as possible. I will spend many years driving that car, so it must be comfortable
-model must be strong. I really don't want to change motor or transmissions many times.

I have thought that model 760Li would be really good for to trip, but is it? I think motor would last, but is that model too powerful? Will it be too easy to break transmission with all that power?

If you want to know more about trip you can ask here or visit my homepage http://www.millionmileroadtrip.com

E34 535 manual.

Simple, powerful (enough) engine that will run on most local blends, simple, sturdy chassis, strong transmission and clutch, and most services can be performed by you. Parts are available, moreso than the E28.

The E34 535 is a great choice. If you are ok with low power then an early model 318i e30 would be a good choice.

OK...

To drive a million miles, you're looking at at least $100,000 (very conservative estimate) in fuel and around 600 days of (continuous highway speed) driving time.

Combined with the fact that this is your first post, someone might be trollin'.

Might sound like it, but no, I am not trolling. I estimated that trip would cost €1.6 million and would take about 5 years. I am going to make money by selling ad space from my car. So if everything goes well I make good amount of money by driving million miles. If I don't get enough sponsors, then driving million mile will just take longer (currently I drive about 100 000km/year, so million mile would take about 16 years, but it wouldn't cost anything because I would drive that amount anyway).

Thanks for the answers. I didn't even think before that it could be better to buy old car and drive with it. Modern car would surely be great to drive, but it would also be awful to fix. I think there isn't many parts in old cars that you couldn't quick fix and drive to nearest service station, but with new cars it might be hard to even change a light bulb. Currently I drive my brothers 525 E34 and it is really good car to drive. I think E34 535 is one car that I seriously would think about.

So if you were planning on making money on ad space, it would make sense to also choose a car with a lot of surface area. You know, there are a lot more useful and fulfilling ways to make money and spend your time. Is money your main motivating reason to do this? Or do you just love driving on the highway so much that you want to do this? That's a lot of wasted energy and pollution too....I'm not trying to put you out or anything, but your idea seems...well...stupid. Do you have a family or friends? Being on the road that long will get lonely as hell. You'll eat sleep and sh*t driving for like 4 years. If you plan on doing this over 16 years, that's no big feat - but if you actually like to travel, then that makes sense.

What will you be driving 1million miles for? If it's just for the hell of it, I can't imagine why somebody would buy add space. If it's for charity, then power to you, but still I've got my skepticism, as really, it's just a long drive and nothing that ground breaking. 1million miles at 60MPH driving 24/7 no stops for fuel, food, sleeping or using the restroom will take 1.9years. Your goal of doing this in 5 years would work out to around 9 hours per day 7 days a week 365 days a year of continuous driving, remember this is at highway speeds. Who would want a 60MPH billboard? You've got a lot of research left to do. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but you've got a lot more work to do before you even consider what car to drive.

To add, the stress of doing this would be insane. I'm a pilot who loves to drive my cars long distances, and could not FATHOM spending that much time consecutively in a 300pax aircraft, let alone a car.

I am making this mostly because of money, but also because I was driving and thought that driving is so fun that it would be perfect job. I also want to see the world and this would be good way to see it. Of course when this idea came up to my mind, I just thought how wonderful it would be to drive BMW and there is most beautiful sun set in my mind. In the reality I think that there would be lot of hard days in that trip example broken tire in the rain or something. I haven't think all the downsides yet.

Unfortunately I do have a family and luckily I have lot of friends. I think the hardest part on this (after getting sponsors) will be that I have to be away from home. My family can spend time with me whole summer and one week on the autumn, on the Christmas and on the spring. I think that there is a good change that I have once or twice a week some of my friends with me. So trip wouldn't be so lonely one.

It is not just driving. I am going to take lot of videos and pictures while I am doing this trip and also keep up a blog. So sponsors would get lot of publicity. I also know that there are lot of problems what should be solved before this trip can happen. Biggest problem is how to get critical mass of publicity. There is a change that I get millions of fans who will follow how this trip is progressing and if that happens, then getting sponsors isn't hard job. There is also a change that I don't get enough readers and then I probably can't get any sponsors, but that doesn't matter so much because I only lose €35 and I can afford that easily.

I also appreciate you who points any problem. I mean I have thought this trip, but there are still lot of things that I haven't thought and lot of problems that I should solve.

This. Owned lots of BMWs ... the 535s with manual transmissions were always my favorites and still are.

7 series are bulletproof and never have problems. Stick with the early 2000 models. You probably wont even have to change the oil.

If you stop a lot for interviews, photos, meeting people etc it'll take you the better part of a decade to do this.

And how exactly is this only going to cost your 35 Euros without sponsorship but 1.6 million with sponsors? :shifty

Currently I have spend 35 euros to website and that is all what I lose if I don't get any sponsors, because then there isn't any good reasons to drive million miles.

Before there was a suggestion that it would be good to choose a car with a lot of surface area. I have thought about that. I was thinking that I would get a bus and modified it. Take almost all the seats away and make it look like a room. Then I would also save money, because I wouldn't have to spend so much money on hotel rooms. Then I thought that it would be more fun to drive bmw instead of bus.

lol. ok. I thought you were going to do it either way.

I must say that in the time it'd take you to drive a million miles you could get a degree from a good school and secure a job paying you good money.

If you do start selling ad space at $100 / sq. cm. then buy one of these.

Have you owned any 7-series BMW? I have thought that 7-series would be best to make this trip, but lot of people says that 535 would be best and I like to know why. Is it harder to fix 7-series if something happens in the trip or is it just harder to break 535 or is it something else, like 535 is nicer to drive?

Sorry, but this might be the dumbest thing I've heard all year.
You have a family, and someone needs to say it.

Where exactly do you plan to drive?
How exciting will it be to watch some dude driving around all day?

I predict you earn $94 in advertising.

He is trolling.

The best car is the Mercedes SD already posted....most reliable, comfortable, runnable, and fixable around the world.

I predict a low chance this will actually manifest...
