Help! What would be the most cost effective route to replace the primary catalytic converters on my '07 335i sedan?

My SES light turned on, so I took it in. Dealer told me my catalytic converters are bad.

I'm in California, and you know all that emmisions stuff is more expensive in Cali.

Dealer quoted me almost $4 grand to replace both. :help

As far as I know the cats are covered by the rather lengthy emissions warranty. I could be wrong, but check your warranty manual.

federal warranty is 8 years or 80k miles.

if you are over 80k miles and since you are in cali, i am of no help since i am not full aware of their emissions laws. I dont know if aftermarket will work.

Also if you are the orig owner, call BMWNA and see if they will assist you on it. these earlier 335 had fuel issues and having those issues could have damaged the cats. just a thought.

Aftermarket cats will not work, period, unless you plan on tuning them out which isn't legal.

Regardless of what any company tells you, regardless of whether they are marketed as "50 state legal", or any other pitch to sell them, they will not work. The aftermarket cats may reduce emissions to federal standards on a flow bench so that they can be legal to sell, but your cars computers need to see very specific emissions values or it will throw a check engine light. Those values will only ever be seen while using factory cats. Anyone who tells you otherwise is mistaken, do not get taken by people who do not know better, and do not waste your money.

I would check to make sure you aren't covered by the federal emissions warranty, and then I would see if NA will help you with the price if you aren't covered. I don't know if I would push NA with saying that high pressure fuel pump problems ate your cats, but if you want to try you could. It's unlikely and they know it.

Did your vehicle have some type of problem that was ignored for a length of time before being repaired? Stuck open injector? Something along those lines? It's very rare to see catalytic converters go bad at such low mileage.
