Should the front windows on a late E24 roll down 1/4" and then up again when you close the door? I know my E46 did that, to get a better seal. My E24 doesn't.

Nope they unfortunately don't have that feature. I think it might be possible to retrofit the system from a new model though.

The first BMW to have those was the E31

Hrm - I can see a retrofit seriously reducing the wear on the door seals.

I think it's a neat idea but too much trouble to go through to save the rubber. 25-year life on the seal is just fine by me.

Only wait for when you really need to get a new one (because the used ones are shot too)$$$.

I actually don't think that implementing the automatic roll up/down of the windows should be too hard. It could be done with factory parts from a newer model, only thing that should be added (besides rewiring with the needed relays, modules) is a door handle sensor.

Is your door hard closing because of a poor fit at the top door seal?

There is a trick to getting the window to fit into the top door seal grove that is not mentioned in the basic adjustments above, see below.

Ditto on the Gummi-Pflege

My e36 325is has the window retract and it seems kind of clunky to me.

Funny and sad story on Gummi-Pflege :

I went over all the rubber on my E3 last year including the bumper. Those who use it know it smells nice. I covered the car and went on vacation for a week only to come back and find a hole in my BavAuto expensive cover and a chunk of rubber out of my bumper. No good deed goes unpunished.

That sucks...funny but sucks. Hope you found the culprit or your trap did. I love the smell of gummi-plege and the applicator itself lasts a good amount of time too.
