Will a 8/96 be a direct/exact swap for my 3/98? I found one with 80k for $900 delivered. Im waiting on vin to verify mileage...

That's the exact same swap I'm doing right now. The engines are virtually the same, just verify that the knock sensors are the same connector, mine were different, so I had to reuse the knock sensors. Also, the fuel rails were different on mine, so I installed my old one back on. Other than that, everything else seems to be the same. Keep your harness, since those are obviously different.
Oil level sensor was also different between the two, one had a wire with a harness connector, the other had a connector right on it.

I can just use all my stuff for what is different and just swap over, correct? I knew fuel rail would be different. i think the 97 has the fpr on rail and the 98 doesnt...

If its possible for you to get the parts, I'd switch to the updated fuel rail. I have one that I'm going to install on my car. You can get a nice adjustable FPR from Cosmo Racing and the updated rail has a pressure equalizing tube.

What is the updated fuel rail you are talking about? Is it on 99-01?

So this engine i may get comes without accessories which is alternator, ac compressor and starter i believe... Since ac compressor will be swapped will i need to recharge the system so my ac will work? And what else should be changed while its out? Said to have 80k miles...

Yeah if you're swapping the A/C compressor, you will have to remove the lines to swap them to the other. You can't avoid opening the system if you do that. When you do open the system, make sure you replace the receiver/dryer because of the moisture that gets in the system. Use a shop that's good with A/C stuff and has a machine that can recover the r134a and oil and then recharge it with the proper amount. A/C systems are very finicky if not done right (been there done that, so now I do all my own A/C work :rolleyes).
Edit: I'm retarded and didn't catch the "without". If you're going to use your current compressor, then maybe you can get away with not opening the system. I don't know enough about engine swaps on these cars to know if you have the clearance and such to loosen the compressor from the block and R&R the engine with the compressor hanging there.

Another thing I just remembered was different AC pumps. So if you keep your AC pump, make sure that the new motor has a same passenger side mount as yours, especially where the AC bolts up. My 98 uses a 3 bolt ac pump and a 3 bolt bracket, the 96 donor had a 4 bolt AC pump and 4 bolt bracket.

If i had to swap brackets would it work?

I did not remove the AC compressor for my swap. I was able to leave it connected and simply move it out of the way. It was a bit of a pain when I was removing the old engine and installing the new one, but I'm sure it was easier than the alternative. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about your swap. I know I need to make a thread, I just simply never have the time.
