View Full Version : Help-drive axle to final drive
mounting area is wet from diferential oil.
I will have tyo check the diferential oil level hope it is not low as a result of this, since there are no oil marks on the groung yet.
Is there a just a seal that has to be replaced or it is a larger more serious job?
I have a picture so you will better understand what i am talking about but i need to learn the steps how to attach with the new message.

Sounds like the side outdrive seals need replaced. This procedure is outlined in the Bentley manual. Not sure if it can be done with the diff installed though..
that shows the oily area marked in red.
How serious is this and what do you think would be the best solution?
Somebody from the board should know about this.
Please advise.

If it is only leaking right where the inner cv joint bolts onto the outdrives then my guess is that it is grease that became liquified and is running out of the joint. I just changed my diff to a 3.38 LSD unit this weekend and mine had a little grease coming from that area but not enough to leak on the floor if you know what I mean.
The most important thing here is to figure out EXACTLY where it's coming from. It will be grease if from the joint and gear oil(stinky stuff) and more wet/runny looking if coming from the outdrive seals. In the pic where you show the wet area it doesn't appear to be running out of the seal area. If it was it would be wet all over the lower bolts(the inner regular headed ones) that go directly into the diff case.
Hope this helps. Let us know what's up.
this area is warmer than other side because exhaust is located very close to it and causes higher temperature and maybe this is the grease melting.
Yes the leak is narrow and all around the line marked in red only.
It is hard to find how much is leaking because this part spins when car is moving and oil is lost from spining.
I have Redline oil 75W-90 in differential, is there any method to identify if this leak is redline oil or melted grease.

See if the level is down in the diff or see what it smells like. Gear oil really has a different (bad) smell to it.
