Anyone have a kit I can rent/borrow/buy?

Looking for a vanos tool kit to be flung through the mail to my door step by the 30th! I had a window of time peek open and I'm going to do work.

I've read a post of using wood to make a cam block. Is this reasonable or asking for play in the cams? I get using an allen key for flywheel lock and a screw for tensioner lock, but the DIY cam block...??

Thanks in advance!

I made mine out of oak and it worked fine. The first time, I rented the cam blocks and cam turning tool.

I've heard the turning tool is pretty essential. The cam ends come square and perpendicular to the head when the engine is at TDC, right?

The cam turning tool makes easier, but not essential. I was able to turn the cam a few degrees with my hands, just enough to allow the vanos to slide in. Would I have like it, yes. But at the time I was unemployed and felt I could do the job without renting the tools.

The end of the cams are just slightly rectangular. That way the cam blocks can only go on 1 of 2 ways. There are two dimples pointing up on the cam end when the cam is in the correct position.

I made the wood block with measurements (found online somewhere) and I had a spare cylinder head with cams to use as my template.

Precision wood tools... I love it...lol

How much are you willing to spend to have all the tools?

Rent tools, $25
Deposit $150
Shipping next day $40?
Return shipping $15? (usps flat rate insured for $200)

Of which you get back $150 when the tool comes home.

When you're broke, you have to do what saves you money.
