I need to get a MS41.2 DME for my OBD2 S52 race motor. The class I am moving towards demands that I use OBD2. I have an OBD2 harness, but the DME that came with it was MS41.1. I have been told from the programmer I will use that I need to have an MS41.2. I have been in contact with several bmw junkyards, but all their 96-99 M3s all have MS41.1 DMEs. WTH? Where do I get one?

The ECU you are looking for is from a OBDII 96-99 M3.
The MS41.1 they "say" is for the M3 is wrong, that ECU is for the M52, both 328 and 528.
You should be able to find one on craigslist, ebay or a part out car for pretty cheap. I bought an extra MS41.1 for $60 bucks and is now running my car with a TRM tune.

I have run the VIN on several of the MS41.1 DMEs and they are from M3s? Every OBD2 M3 on ebay right now is MS41.1.

Same hardware different software. What exactly are you trying to do? If the tuner doesn't know the difference I'd find another tuner.
What does the vin on the DME say?

So I was curious about this thread. I pulled the dme out of my 1999 M3 and the label reads ms41.1.
So which cars had the ms41.2 and why was it different?

MS41.2 ECU does not exist. In europe it is MS41.0 and in north america it is MS41.1.
The reason why M3 ecus are all labeled MS41.1 but called MS41.2 is because of the software inside the ECU. Thats it.

Yes. All 'MS41.2' ECUs from 96-99 USDM M3s will say MS41.1 on the outside label.
