View Full Version : Value for a rough M?

Hi gang. I'm selling my M and it's not in the greatest shape... I've already bought a new car and just want to unload this thing. Wondering what you feel I should be asking for this car.

It's Cosmos on black, 5 speed; would make an excellent candidate for a track toy. 181,5xx miles, I've owned it for 7 years and since 63,xxx miles.

The bad:
I have a miss on the #4 cylinder. I pulled the codes and I think it could be fixed with some vacuum leak hunting.

It needs some refreshing work all around. Suspension has rattles and is tired. O2 sensors need replacing, and I'm sure the cat's need it too, but I don't have the "rotten eggs" smell.

Windshield is cracked.

Steering rack leaks.

Headliner was sagging and my sunroof jammed open. Both have been removed and the sunroof has been replaced with a cf filler panel. I still have the headliner panel in good shape and I have enough alcantara to cover it and the pillars. Actual sunroof included if wanted, it's collecting dust in my garage. Glove box cover came off, I still have it, just needs adhesive to put it back on.

Was in a minor wreck ~3 winters ago. Slid into a hitch on an F150 in a freak snowstorm at ~10mph. New hood, bumper cover and radiator and headlights. No airbags deployed. No damage to the actual structural bumper, hitch missed it by ~1/8".

The tint job it has is awful. It's been like that since I bought it, but recently the drivers side rear started peeling badly, so it had to come off. The adhesive is still there.

The good/mods:

Driver seat has typical wear on bolster, but the rest of the interior is in good shape.
UUC SSK and DSSR, ZHP knob.
UUC lightweight fly and clutch, installed early fall last year along with a brand new master and slave cylinders. Work done at Hafkemeyer here in KC.
Carbon fiber hood - painted with a light coat, cf weave pattern shows through.
Carbon fiber sunroof filler panel - naked
Powerflex RTAB's
Rogue RSM's
Fluidyne Aluminum radiator
Stewart EMP h2o pump
ZKW lights
UUC Performance brake kit up front = Wilwood calipers, E46 M rotors and Hawk pads. Spacers included to clear stock wheels.
8.5" Contours on all 4 corners
Valve cover gasket replaced ~'10ish

What's reasonable? I don't want to ask too much, but at the same time I would prefer not to give it away.

Thanks for any help!

pics are a must. Your best bet is to fix the miss, the windshield and the easy stuff. without pics I would say $6k.

With some work, I say 6k.

Without, your looking at 5k on a good day IMO. Problem with these cars is you just never know. It could be a $50 fix, could be a 750+ fix. Would you take the risk? Sure some buyers might, but those aren't necessarily the 2 words you want when you're selling a car. You want to dump these things off to 18 year olds who are spending mommy and daddy,s dime. You'll have a better chance making their dimes yours if it runs smoothly. Especially at those miles. (Even though the engine should still last a long time IMO)

Yeah, as is I say below $5k. And the miles don't help it out either. It would be a good project for someone.

Yeah, I just bought a '95 with a very good interior, pretty good exterior, and 149k for $5500.

Your material is ACTUAL alcantara? The stuff that's $85+/yard

At least $6k. Most of the people here will throw out some extremely low figures, based on some ridiculous deals that they somehow found. Go on autotrader, ebay, CL or even classifieds on this very site and I can almost guarantee that anything under $6k will either be a POS auto, completely trashed or both.

I just bought my 95 M auto with 178k that runs perfect for 4200. Need paint, body is in good shape no major dents. Black leather interior worn but no tips. I thought I got a good deal. It was even smogged!!

Autos always sell less than manuals so don't go based on the fact he got it cheap.

Id say 5-6k in the shape it's in now. If you can I'd part some stuff out. You'd get more outta it. Like the Zkws for example baring u have the original lights still.

$4,000
It's gunna take $4,000 to make it nice again. Then it'll be worth $6,500.

6ish sounds about right. You'll need to dip into the 5's to move it fast though...

That's very true. I was shopping all of SoCal for about 2 months and I couldn't find one 5spd anywhere near dd condition for under 7k. I'm sure had my m been a 5 SPF it would've sold for 6500 or so all day. As an old man (almost 40) I don't mind cruising in the auto.

SoCal prices gotta be the highest I've heard. I once sold a Techno 5spd 2dr 170k with NO issues for 6400 to a kid. I bout cried. I replaced tons of wear items. It worked perfectly. Then the kid wrapped it around a pole 6 months later.
I think I got such a poor price because of the color.
I must be old too at 38!

Lol I'll be 39 this year... Anything I was looking at from La to SD that was a 5spd under 7k was basically not road worthy. I live in San Diego and drove up to Anaheim to get my M. So far so good. The longer I'm on the forum and reading about some of the mechanical issues people are having the better deal I think I got.

a real paint job is going to run AT LEAST $4k. most E36M's under $6k are needing serious attention. I bought mine for $4,500 and it is mint, but needed $2k worth of motor work. Either way you can't get into an up-to-date, clean, non beat E36M3 for under $7-10k. My car is a perfect example, now that I have gone through it. Bought it for $4,500, put $4k into it, now its probably worth $8-10k

your worried about the mechanical issues people are having? You realize these "mechanical issues" are with every E36 M3, its just whether or not they have been addressed. If your cooling system/suspension hasn't been addressed recently, your gonna be one us too :)

I'm sure I will be, my point is for what I paid I actually expected more mechanical neglect. I did my due diligence before buying and am pleasantly suprised so far. I actually plan on going through everything from nose to tail before addressing the cosmetics just for piece of mind. This is how I've treated all my cars and it's always worked out well for me.
