Hi guys, I get some cluster codes when I scan the car and I did a cluster check now and looks like a few lights are missing. The BMW technician said that when you put the key in position 2, check engine light won't lit up which sounded a bit silly. Anyway the lights that are missing seem to be check engine, oil, seat belt, and another two that located in the middle. So the question is , is there any bulb behind it or previous owner removed it?

Thank you

There are LED's behind those symbols. For that many to be out or any to be out for that matter, it has probably been tampered with or a plug has come loose.

Mine is the same I think (01, 740i with no codes). I run the cluster test with key in pos'n 1. Several lights (battery, oil, check engine) do not light. I don't think there is anything wrong as most of the missing lights do light up with the key in pos'n 2 and the engine not running.

I did the test in key in position two, battery and oil lighted up, but no check engine , no seat belt and no srs. I will scan the can and update this with codes related to cluster.

Thank you Edwin, I think I should stop fussing or maybe it is common with all E38 owners :))

Hi Farshad.

You said no seatbelt light, no check engine and a bunch of other stuff and Edwin said Euro version so there's no light-up on two things.

I'm on a crappy mobile stick at the moment, my ride is 8 floors down, I can't print because my wireless is slightly buggered (just too lazy atm to fix it), but I have to say that your Euro cluster pic looks like mine, in that, it seems to be OK.

But, as I have Euro RHD, I've sent your cluster pic to work where I'll print it tomorrow. Check it aganst mine after work in the car park and post in about 24 hours time, which is a long time when you're a forum addict (oh, that's me!)

-Stu

PS: there's nothing wrong with my ride, it was a good buy. But I'm preparing for the moment when everything goes wrong at once; in an E38 that could be tomorrow or never. I have 'tomorrow anxiety' and 'never anxiety'. I'm anxious that everything could happen tomorrow which is why I make a lot of useless posts and I'm anxious that nothing will ever happen and that I could've been playing tennis tonight instead of lurking in this forum.

I bought a car once, and one of the dash bulbs went out. When I opened the cluster to replace it, I found electric tape over the service engine light lol.

Yes, I have a feeling that somebody removed the check engine light and seat belt on purpose. When I was getting around 20 error codes, my check engine light was still off !!!!!
