Stick Shift 740i ???

Got a friend in California who tells me that he has seen a stick shift
2001 740i. I am a 6 series guy so I don't know much about the loved
E38. Is there a possibility that there is a factory built standard 5 speed
transmission on this shorty sporty?
Are there people who have done a transmission swap?

Only the pre-99 euro v8 shorties were available with a 6 speed. They did a swap on that car. :)

ALL EURO E38's, regardless of shorty or not, had the option of a 6 Speed.

Someone in So. Cal did a very professional six speed swap. That might be the one. There is also a 740iL six speed in the Seattle area that was done very nicely by a member on here - Got to drive that one! VERY VERY NICE INDEEDEE!!!! :thumbup:

The other one was done by Luke who is also a member on here. Those are the three I know about.

I know the lower models got a 5 speed stick, and I'm almost certain the long wheel bases didn't get a manual option along with the face-lift versions (i or iL).

All one has to do to confirm if a manual tranny was available is use www.realoem.com or www.bmwfans.info ...by the time you select what you need and get over to TRANSMISSION...you'll see if the "MANUAL" option is grayed out. If it is grayed out...then it wasn't offered. :)

750 was never offered as a 6-speed. The only BMW-made, 6-speed 750i, is the one marked 735i in the Transporter movie.

Not sure about the 740 though. I've seen a couple for sale here in Norway, but I'm not sure if they are converted.
