For sale I have build custom fabricated 4 point roll bars for e30, e36 and e46 platforms. They are made out of 1.75x.095 DOM tubing and has 3/16" Mounting plates along with grade 8 hardware. I designed it so you can still run a rear seat, rear side panels and stock sunroof and headliner. I build these with custom harness bars as well as any other options you would like. As for me I have about 15 years of metal fabricating and welding experience and to date have sold well over 100 of these bars. This roll bar is top notch and I have not seen any other ones that are designed like mine. Please contact me at ben.sipson@gmail.com. If you send me your number I can call you as well if you have any more questions. I am located in Seminole, FL. I ship these for $150 to anywhere in the continental United States via Greyhound Package Express for $150 The bar fits any E36 CoupeSedan. Also make these for E46 Coupes and working on a E30 bar as well.
PRICE: $550 without rear x brace, $650 with rear X brace

You can daily drive with a roll bar. You just can't put people in the back seat.

BUMP for a great guy.. spoke to Ben on the phone last night and he knows his product and competition and he has a great product and is willing to work with people on future roll bars.. I'm contemplating doing a rollbar from him!

How you get that in the car? Very well made.

You have to take out the rear seats, and side panels, front seats and the arm rest and ebrake. Its really not bad taking that stuff out. Then it fits right into place. Having a friend there would help. I put it in my car about ten times by myself.

And to clarify this meets all SCCA spces for roll cage tubing and design. It is 1.75 Outside Dimensions x .120 Wall Thickness DOM tubing. The rear mounting plates are contoured to fit the rear wheel arches and the floor plates are bent to match the contours of the floor.

Hey guy, a bunch of you have emailed me & asked me what i thought about Ben's Roll bar design & i figured I'd list my unbiased impression here. (I don't know Ben & i am basing this impression off of his description & photos)

I go to the track a lot & I recently purchased a new TC Kline Bar that weighs in at 54lbs. In comparison to Ben's bar, the TC Kline bar is 20lbs lighter but it does not have the rear X brace that Ben's has.

Ben's design seems to be more rigid & should have more protection in a roll over or side impact. I think he has taken his design influence from more of a roll cage style.

The TC Kline Bar shipped from Denver to New England cost roughly $175 on top of the $595 purchase price, so Ben's bar is far more affordable.

The TC Kline bar & VSR1 bar both have a bend behind the drivers seat to accommodate a further back seating position. I'm 6'5 and this is good for a stock seat, but with a race seat, Ben's strait cross bar should leave plenty of room.

Ben's contoured Foot styles look correct.

The welds look clean in the Photo & his chose of metal thickness is the going requirement.

In closing, if I had not already bought the TC Kline Bar, I think Ben is offering a solid bar locally for a good price and i think i would have bought one.

Ben, you should think of a name for your company / Bar & put your name on your design. You might get a following and it will allow people down the road to research your equipment.

Also, perhaps offer a second lighter option for guys who are really weight conscious. 20lbs is a lot to some of us. (Especially when you gained 10lbs over the holiday)

Good Luck.

just an FYI, a bolt in roll bar is not going to meet any racing series rules. The tubing diameter would not matter in this regard.

If you wanted to build an E36 to meet the most classes, the majority of the cage design would be in 1.75 x .095. .120 wall is for smaller diameter tubing, in lighter cars.

GREAT design, and the contoured feet are a HUGE plus over some other designs, and I really like the fact that it is all one piece, with a X in the back to help reinforce the back downtubes.

Good luck, and in the future, if u can go to a 1.75 x .095 wall you would be better off, and lighter.

NASA time trials dont require a rollbar/cage, thus dont have any rule expectations for such, and can use any bar you want.

If you were to go to W2W, you wouldnt have a bolt in rollbar anyways, so this wouldnt even be part of the discussion in rules compliance.

In this picture, it appears you have another bend in the bottom of the main hoop. Is that correct? Or is the main hoop only bent on "one plane"?

Yes there are slight bends right about where the harness bar crosses. And I can absolutely make these out of 1.75 x.095 DOM if rules allow. It will save weight for sure. I just went with what TC Kline and Autopower used for their bars which is .120 DOM. I can also eliminate the rear X which will save weight. Also if anyone feels like they need bent harness bars for seat clearance I can do that as well.

Also I thought I would throw this in here. This is my 1969 Toyota FJ40 I am workin on. Just finished up tacking the cage together today. Might make some slight adjustments to it. I think I got a little out of hand with bending tube on this one :D

the bend in the main hoop is a huge no no for cage building. Can u make these exactly like your design in .095 and the main hoop only bent in one plane?

THAT would be the setup to make multiples of...

Maybe we are not talking about the same thing here. There are 4 total bends on the main hoop. 2 up top and 2 where the harness bar is located. Looks just like the pic of the bar you posted.

3. Main Hoop
A. The main roll cage hoop shall be as wide as the full width of the interior and must be as close to the roof as possible without violating the provisions of “Inspection” outlined below. One continuous length of roll bar tubing shall be used as the main hoop. The main hoop must consist of not more than four bends maximum, totaling 180 degrees +/- 10 degrees and in the same plane.

tubing specs

pg 87

3. 2501 to 3000 pounds
a. 1.500” x 0.120” DOM/Chromoly/Seamless
b. 1.750” x 0.095” DOM/Chromoly/Seamless

NASA rules are fairly close to these specs as well. With your rollbar being a fully welded single piece, it would be easy for someone to weld this into their car if ur plates meet the specs, and then all they have to do is add the front half of the cage.

That makes your option VERY enticing to future buyers

the 2 bends in the main hoop at the harness bar are on the same plane as the rest of the bar, or do those bends pull the main hoop bar forward/backward in the car?

Ok guys so I have done some math and and have figured out weights for you.
1.75 x .120 DOM = Approx 75lbs
1.75 x .095 DOM = Approx 55lbs

Now some people have contacted me about removing the rear x brace and going with the two down instead. Here is a picture of what I would do if that were the case. So just imagine the X removed and the blue line a small support brace. This would weigh in around 48lbs if it was .095 and about 61lbs with .120

I am buying the revised 1.75 x .095 bar without the X bar in place. Basically how his new picture is, is what I will be getting. Instead of the Xbrace there will be a horizontal tube between the main hoop and both tubes connecting to the rear wheel well. I like this design for my application as it is lighter and still very strong.

as long as the 2nd downtube bar starts at the harness bar node (strength, you want them all at nodes), and then terminates on the plate with the second downtube bar.

You do not want to just put a support bar in the middle somewhere.

On your cage, you also have a door bar backing up that brace bar. On the roll bar, there will be no door bar. So, i don't think it's too critical where the brace goes.

absolutely INCORRECT...

you want those bars terminating at a node. The concepts are all the same for a roll bar or a roll cage

absolutely INCORRECT...

you want those bars terminating at a node. The concepts are all the same for a roll bar or a roll cage

I know nothing about cage/bar design but I'm assuming that nodes are important in cages to avoid shear. For the roll bar, there's no opposing force (like the door bar of your cage that Jon already mentioned) and therefore should not shear under normal circumstances. If you hit a wall with the side of the car hitting straight on and created an axial force through the harness bar, it should create practically no opposing forces in the direction of the brace bar since it's at ~90* angle and would not shear. Now, if you hit the wall side first at an angle, I feel that having it welded at the node would be more beneficial since it wouldn't twist and buckle in between where the harness bar and brace bar connect. This would have to be a pretty severe crash to actually do such damage to the bar and most likely fatal, but for argument sake.. I'm no expert but I just wanted to voice my opinion and see what the experts have to say.

I do really like how the brace bar is underneath the window line if attached at the node.

fatboycowen
03-01-2012, 08:17 AM
I'm not suggesting that connecting at the node isn't better. That's pretty obvious. I'm just saying that:

Brace shown > No brace
Brace at node > Brace shown

The sheet metal at the wheel well is so thin that i doubt either of the braces in a simple roll bar are going to help. I can see it being useful in a cage though.

One aspect no one has discussed is the ability to put wheels/tires into the back seat with the bar installed. In my car, with my bar, with no brace, i am able to stack the tires. I think with the lower brace, that would be more difficult.

savage217
03-01-2012, 09:20 AM
I am going to have him make this controversial brace, crash my car and test whether or not it is an important structual piece:devillook

I agree with Jon, it is clearly better than no brace at all but is obviously not the most ideal method, which would be welded to the node. Good enough IMO.

UPDATED PRICE- I will be charging $475 for a 1.75 x .095 DOM bar like the one I have posted in the first post. Without paint will be $460. If anyone wants anything different we can absolutely work something out and price it accordingly. Also I wanted to mention I am including plates that go on the underside of the car that sandwich the stock metal. I am not including hardware at this time, however if someone wants me to supply that I can pick it up and would just pass the cost of it along to you. Thank you all for the support, this is fun!

First...Ive attached a page that has the dimensions of the coupe and sedan.

Second...If you don't already know large items like these rollbars can be shipped nationwide via Greyhound Package Express(bus) for around $100.

Thirdly...Powder coating these bolt in roll bars runs about $250.00 but if you're doing multiples they may be able to get that price down.

Cheers !

Yea, i would have preferred a looser fitting bar, since i run a headliner. My headliner now has rub marks from installing the bar, and they will never go away.

It's about time someone did a good bar for a reasonable price.

The bar is not very close to either the side walls or the roof. You really want it as tight to these as possible. Another thing to look as is the foot plates. Do they contour to the floor or are they flat and pulled in by the bolts.

Widebody325
03-09-2012, 11:20 AM
The bar was designed to fit with stock side panels and stock headliner. There is about a half inch on each side and about a half inch to the top with a stock headliner. If someone wants it taller than I can make it taller, and yes plates are contoured.

savage217
03-09-2012, 11:31 AM
Plates are contoured very well, I would say as good as the TCKline version. It is not as tight to the top of the headliner, that is definitely true, but I doubt that really matters much in the grand scheme of things. The side fitment seems to be similar to most rollbars. I am happy with the fitment overall.

$475 for the .095 with the rear X.
$460 for the 0.95 without the rear X.
I can also do a custom job if you want.

I just shipped out a bar yesterday via greyhound. It cost $86 to Rochester, NY. So that is going to be the cheapest way to get them if you want it shipped. If not you can come pick it up with a truck or just take out your interior parts that need to come out and we can just put it in your car. I would also like to add that I have also made some slight modifications to snug the bar up to the headliner a little more to ensure a nice tight fitment.

Some people were requesting pictures of bare joints as well so here are a few I took the other day.

Hey everyone. I just wanted to let you all know I have made a few of these now and have really honed in the design. Here are a few pictures of what I have come up with. Notice the rear bars and the X brace terminate on the same node, as well at the diagonal bar that goes to the drivers head has been moved up. Also the X brace tubes and diagonal tube contact and are welded directly to the mounting plates. I thank everyone for their support and input. This bar now could be used in a full cage application at any point if you decided to go that route. Thanks again and keep the orders coming!

Instead of bolting, can you just weld it in?

Absolutely! I can make it without holes for that exact purpose. Or you could just plug weld the holes which would work too.

Alright guys, just wanted to check in and give everyone a heads up. Things are going great and I have made about 8 bars in the past 4 weeks. The design is now super solid and I feel very confident with the product. I have been thinking of a name for my little business here and I think Bayside Fabrications is what I am going to run with. I think it has a nice ring to it and it will be much easier to identify with rather than "that guy on the forums who makes roll bars." Just wanted to run it by my local guys and see what you think as far as the name is concerned. Oh, and I have a E46 M3 coming in next weekend to play with. Another bar will be coming soon!

Purchased on of these a few weeks back. Bar arrived in roughly a weeks time, was very well packed and the whole ordeal was pretty painless. I had never been in a Greyhound station before so that was a bit of an adventure. Must say I am extremely pleased with the purchase. I had a few questions and Ben called/emailed me very quickly. Here are some pics of the bar installed in my very dirty 95 M.

how much shipped to 94611? I am interested in a bar that will be much closer to the roof as I am a tall guy, I plan on removing the sunroof and utilizing a bolt in or carbon sunroof plug, but retaining the liner, if it "rubs the liner" no problem, I want it as tight as possible, not sure if I want the X bar or not, any benefits other than the fact that it looks sweet? I would like to have the bar and installed within a months time if possible, I plan on going to a HPDE on june 15th and would like to have this added safety. LMK what you can do

Thanks

edit - also if you could get us a reduced price on shipping, I have some other locals interested in a bar as well!

I have called all local metal suppliers around Mass, CT, and RI that I can think of and no one can get any DOM! Sorry to everyone who is interested. I made the drive down to meet Ben yesterday. I will say this, and keep in mind I'm not a ballwasher nor do I have any ties to him other than this purchase, but- I wish all of my internet transactions went this smoothly. He answers questions promptly, he's around when he says he's around, and he finishes his work when he says he'll be done. He showed me around his workspace and answered any questions I had.

The bar itself is great out of the box. While it's not in the car yet to assure fitment, the pads are all contoured, all hardware and contoured backers are included, and his jig is definitely accurate enough for me to be comfortable with him mass-producing these. The welds? While I wouldn't call them 'perfect', they are certainly effective, not ugly, and burnt in nicely throughout. While I consider myself a hack welder, they are certainly more than adequate and 100x prettier than I could think of making myself, so please don't take this as a knock on the product.

All in all, I couldn't be happier with the transaction so far. He saved me some serious $$ considering I was about 24 hours away from throwing down for a TC Kline bar plus shipping across country for it.

I was fortunate enough to get one and pick it up from him quite a while back (over a year ago). I think you guys need to understand he's got a full time day job, and these are extremely time intensive to make. I'm sure he'd love to make them for everyone, but life happens sometimes. I think he told me it takes a full 4 nights just to make 3 cages. At the cost, I can totally see why he's not making them anymore.

I would certainly be interested in this as well, but given the history of the thread to this point...makes me wonder if it'd be better to see if he'd consider a Group Buy. Get 5-10 ppl lined up, cash ready...possible even 50% upfront from each purchasing member.

Get enough ppl to COMMIT to buying one, so that way he would know the money is there and waiting, or even if deposit needed.

So I just purchased and installed a rear roll bar that I am 90% sure is OP's design.

One piece, 1.75 OD, contoured foot plates, great welds, originally purchased in CT ~2 years ago. All those facts line up correctly.

I needed something to break up the monotony of Cosmos/black, so I hit it with a splash of New Holland Red (like the tractor). I also bought some rear side bolsters that I will contour around the bar later on:

I think OP simply did not have enough time to continue making them, he stated that he would email me if he began production again later this year (that was a few months ago)

I emailed OP last week or so, and I haven't gotten a reply yet. I don't want to hassle the guy, but it would be nice to at least get a no lol it's better than having the big question mark hanging over my head.

Going by these pictures, he does great work. I hope he resumes, I'd be in for the group buy.

If he's stopped, though, it would be nice to know so that I can stop bugging him.

I like your roll bar and the options you offer in design but Boston is a bit of a hike. Have you investigated offering Yellow Freight as a carrier. I don't think they require packing and since it's not painted who would care if it got a few scratches?

I may have one of these for sale in the near future, but would have to be local as I have no interest in trying to ship it. Its one of his original X-bar designs made of the .120 DOM (IMO much better for Street car weight). PM or email me if local and interested.

OP isn't making these anymore but somebody with the fab skills should pick up where he left off and make some good money. Plenty of demand.

I'm looking to buy one with the extra cross bar in the back, either tubing thickness. PM if you have one for sale, thanks.

I am back from the dead. I have one completed and is ready for pick up or to be shipped via greyhound. Instead of taking orders I am making these as I can then listing them as available. I will be starting a list of interested parties and it is a first come first serve basis. This one does not have a rear x brace. $550

Prodigal son returns!

In case anyone has a sedan and is wondering, you can get the bar into the car, even through the smaller front sedan doors. I moved my bar over from my 99 coupe to 98 sedan. There is more clearance to the headliner, as you would anticipate.

Edited: $100 bump for rear x brace. $50 bump for non x brace. @ $4.75 a linear foot this stuff is not cheap. My material cost is very high and this is the only way I can make it worth my time.

Have you ever made a rollbar for a non-sunroof car before? I'd like the bar to fit pretty close to the roof like the TCKline bars do. Would you also be open to adjusting the height of the harness bar, or adding a second harness bar? I'm tall (6'7) and would need the bar higher than standard, so adding a second one might be a good option.

Widebody325
08-03-2015, 11:45 AM
I have not made a bar for a non sunroof bar. Easy enough to add height. However, without a car to test it on I cannot guarantee fitment. I know every bar I have made fits well and I wouldnt really want to compromise my product with guess work. Same goes for the harness bar. Im 6'4" and I just have my seat setup much lower than most people.

No I don't. You should just have a shop fab something up. That's a "roll cage" and I would recommend doing it properly.

How hard are these to get into the car considering they are one piece? I know the kirk bar has collars for the rear bars.
Also, how is the fitment? I'd imagine tweaking anything with that x-brace in the back is pretty tough.

Not bad once you realize the way to get them through the door is nearly the same orientation they finally mount. Don't need to angle it like crazy or tilt it etc. Just don't gouge the feet on anything.

Fitment is excellent. Any slight inconsistencies in the bar or car get negated when you tighten it down and the BMW tin foil recontours itself...

Back seats where coming out regardless since no one can sit back there. Sold them to fund some other mods. However, I didn't want to just leave it blank since this is Street/Track car and I use the trunk to transport tools etc when driving to the track. They would have fit fine though should I wanted to leave them. Side panels did have to come out and took some finessing to get back into place but they do fit in the OEM location.

I can, I'm 6'5" and I have Ben's bar in my 95 M3 coupe. I can tell you right off to forget about roll bars with the stock Vaders, at my height there simply isn't enough room. At this point my Cobra Suzuka Pro's are permanently installed, and with those I have plenty of room. If you have a sunroof you must also remove the cassette, then a car as small as an E36 starts to work for tall folks.

I'll post pics when I get home.

That'd be great, thanks. I'm also 6'5", sunroof cassette removed. I have a Sparco R100 mounted low and far back on custom mounts, looking to move to a bucket seat sometime soon. Right now the back of my seat is right about in the middle of the B pillar, although I could move it forward an inch or two.

Some shots, let me know if you need more.

My car is currently in the garage on jackstands undergoing full rear suspension rebuild so lighting not the best. There is still some room to put drivers seat further back, but not a whole lot.

Currently I'm using Schroth quickfit harnesses with eventual move to 5 or 6 point.
