Hi all,

I am new to the forum thing but i just wanted to post a thread to see if anyone else had these kind of issues with there e46 320cd.

Basically what happened there last October the car lost all power and when i brought it to the mechanic we discovered that all 4 injectors had to be reconditioned and also the more worring part was one of the baffels on the inlet manifold had broken off and went in on the piston. This ended up bending 4 vales in the head :eyecrazy Needless to say I was not impressed with this. So in the end had to get the head reconditioned to and planed. When we put the car back together we removed the remaining baffels on the manifold to stop this happing again.

Problem is now the turbo is not kicking in when the engine is cold or at the normal 2000 rev as it normally did. Now it varies anything between 2-3k rev line. Also the car is hard of starting in the morning and if the car was stitched off it will not start for at least 8 seconds after being swithed off.

When i get the mechanics computer plugged into it its coming up with two codes:
1: 4191 turbine control flap activation (not too worried about this one as I have baffels removed from manifold)

2: 4530 charge air pressure control small turbo control deviation ??? Any ideas?

I read on some forum before that i should clean the "fuel injection system-ressure sensor. When i done this it made no difference.
Then I thought that it could of been the air mass sensor but then that wouldnt explain why that was gone that it not showing up on the computer.
Then when the car is hard of starting i thought it could of been a glow plug fault but then again its not showing up on the computer.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this irratating problem or is it just down to the fact the baffels are removed from the manifold?

Thanks in advanced,
Shorty.

I just did a gogle search on the M47TUD20 engine. It is a problem and the dealership should have options.
Running the car without them is defintiely going to cause problems. Not uncommon, I had a freiend with a nissan that did the same thing...

Just had a quick read over the reference you left in the last reply. In the 2 sections they talk about having the baffels removed and not effecting the performance of the car. However in my case I have the baffels removed but the performance is effected. I am just wondering if there is a underling problem somewhere else in the engine causing this issue?

Is there an electric acuator on the turbo? It sounds like turbo problems...

I`m not sure about the electric acuator if it is on it, how would i tell? I was thinking it might be the turbo but when we were doing the work rebuilding the engine the mechanic checked the turbo and he said it was perfect. But the has been a kind of a whine/whisle coming from the engine. But another thing if the turbo was faulty how would it be interiment? Would it not just be gone the whole time?
Thank you for your reply, greatly appercepted.

I am looking at real oem for your car and don't see these "intake manifold baffles". How many are there and are and how big are they to fall into the cylinders? I just want to make sure we're talking about the same thing...

Hi sorry where i think the confusion is where i`m calling the intake manifold baffels are actually the swirlflaps?

Thats what I was wondering. Confirm that by examining what you removed, perhaps post a pic of it (them). There are so many components people call "baffles", so lets get on the same page!
I would be nervous that a tech is removing parts and saying "you don't need this"....
and then having problems.
Any literature I have seen is about emissions and low speed drivability, which is what you seem to have a problem with.
We dont have that engine here in the US or Canada, so maybe its better to refer to a BMW tech there who knows these engines..

I have now sold the 320cd after a long struggle with it. The turbo went on the car and i have came to the conclusion that it was on the way out for a while and that is what was causing the car to be down on power. Thanks for all your feed back on this issue.
