View Full Version : Can someone verify this is a non vanos cam sensor?

The number on the sensor is "1724055.2"
Contacts between pins 2 and 3 (or I guess 1 and 2?) is 1.3k ohms.
I have an oscilloscope but I have no idea how to set it for VR/Hall/???
Unlike other BMW hall sensors, this one has a nub on it like BMW VR sensors but I want to be 100% sure. Can anyone confirm?

If it looks like a crank sensor (VR) then you have yourself A non-vanos cam sensor..which is a VR sensor.

They kind of all look the same. VR sensors have the nub IIRC... but that's all I have to go on. I want to be super sure.

so the M50 vanos and M/S52 cam sensors do not have that nub?

I believe, for the most part, that the hall cam shaft sensors are plastic

correctamundo. they don't since they're hall
edit:and what jon said lol

Danke!
I probably just wired the cam sensor wrong then. W00t! simple free fix.

Do you have wiring colors in mind when it comes to the sensors, Rebuilt the motor and now dont have spark on the coils, I find 12v coming to the wires but not the coils, When i tried starting the car on the log i couldnt find rpm signal nor tps. I need someone to help me out with the wiring schematics. Plus i think i messed up on the cam and crank sensor plugins,:help:eyecrazy

Would need more info - what year and model motor, what year harness?

oops sorry. 1991 3er, m50 non vanos. Gstuning Pnp vems ecu.

The cam/crank sensors have their own shielded wires back to the harness. It's all covered in black. Even then the sensor signal wire is yellow and the ground is black.
But yes, all the sensor wiring changes colors drastically over time.

The PNP shouldn't need any wiring work. But, the signal is over a black 1/4" OD cable with a black and yellow wire and a clear/natural shield wire. Signal is on Pin #1 of the sensor - pull back the rubber boot on the connector near the head and look for pin 1 and its respective color.

I see, so if I understand correctly, cam sensor has a particular color which matches to its connect and the same for the crank sensor ?
Op sorry for highkacking your thread.

No - they often plug into one another. You have to label or trace it out.

Confirm your correct, I just checked the wires on the cam sensor and it is black and yellow. its kinda late here now so will continue tomowrow. Btw if the crank sensor isnt functioning properly can this cause my problem of " no spark to the coils and no rpm signal ? "

all sensors between 500 and 1000 ohms are inductive VR , beyond that, are hall, in this case the sensor is hall.

In your case a log will instantly show if there is a sensor at fault or not.
It will tell you if itīs a crank sensor or a cam sensor.
If you get clean rpmīs you have a problem at the injectors or coils.
