The remote on my 2001 530 didn't work when I bought the car a couple months ago, so I tried reprogramming it and had no luck. I finally broke down and ordered a new key from the dealership and tried it and STILL no luck. The dealership seems to think it might be a problem with the car itself, which I guess makes sense. The question is - is this something I fix myself?

Depends on what in the car is bad. Try the key sync procedure yourself and do it many times. Make sure all the doors are closed, make sure the key is not still detected in the ignition, if you have a multimeter you can check the FZV signal from the antenna amplifier to make sure that unit is getting a signal. Do you have the wagon? The wagon is prone to FZV antenna amp water damage. I have some tips for the E46 3-series on my web site that still apply to your car www.bmwgm5.com/no_fob.htm (http://www.bmwgm5.com/no_fob.htm)

I have the E39 sedan. And both I and the guy at the dealership tried it a bunch of times and got nothing.
As a cost-cutting measure, could it be a blown fuse? I can't find any fuses for keyless entry, but I did find a spot for central locking system in the trunk box, although it doesn't have a fuse in it.

Does anyone have any advice here? Just trying to see if there's a possible problem with the keyless entry fuse, but when I check the fuse panel in the trunk, it doesn't even look like there's a fuse in the spot.

Check the fuse in the trunk. I think its fuse 53, but I'm not sure.

The pictures in the links included are of the box in the trunk. Is there another one that I'm missing?

Thanks for the referral! Fuse was blown and I had to pull the actuator plug. Works perfectly now!
