After noticing white smoke from my exhaust and a loss of coolant, i figured its time to change the head gasket. Since Ill be having this replaced, what else should i replace? Was thinking water pump, thermostat, timing belt, maybe radiator hoses? Ill be getting the parts from drivewire unless there's a comparable place elsewhere.
Also, what's the specialty tools needed?

There is no timing belt on the M50. Your thinking of the e30's m20 that has the timing belt
As far as the timing chain is concerned. Replace the tensioner and guide
I'm at work others will chime in with what u need. There are also tons of threads already. Try the search

I would replace the cooling system parts you mention for several reasons. (thermostat, water pump and hoses) First they are low cost. Second they are prone to failure and third they may be the cause of your failed head gasket.
Also don't forget new head bolts.
The only specialty tool that I think is necessary is the cam alignment tool/fixture.
