Mine are currently in my living room. I took them out for extra space during a trip around Christmas, and I've just been too lazy to put them back in since. Thinking about doing it today though. I'm in a 'work on my car a ton today' mood.
It might be because I just got a box full of parts from flyfish :)

inspired to fab up a custom 10" in the back but the entire process is too much $$$ right now...would need either a 3-channel & mono combo or a 5-channel to run the sound through and a new head unit plus wires wood and carpet...or maybe a 3-channel and new speakers and HU
or maybe i just a new dice compatible bmw HU, some speakers from bws n call it a system

I don't have "subs" but I do have CDT 6x9" and 5.25" woofers in the rear deck and kick panels. I also have the matching CDT tweeters and Vifa mid ranges in all the factory locations. I love how stealthy it is and it sound so much better than the factory HK speakers. It produces pretty decent thump, but more importantly the SQ is amazing. Here are my specs.....
Rear:
Woofers: CDT CL69 6"x9"
Tweeters: CDT TW25s
Front:
Woofers: CDT CL-5E 5.25"
Mid Ranges:Tymphany Peerless (Vifa) NE65w-4 2"
Tweeters: CDT TW22s
Head unit: BMW Professional CD43
Amplifier: Stock e36 Harmon Kardon
Crossovers: Built into the amp
I just need to source as 4ch Zapco amplifier for a decent price and then use that and eliminate the factory crossovers and use the crossovers matched to the speakers. Just the speakers and head unit alone have improved it vastly, and it sounds better to me than the BSW stage 1 kit that I listened to in another e36, but I am sure that is partly due to the head unit. With the new amplifier and x-overs I will be able to maximize the potential of the speakers and it should sound even better.

My "Design Criteria"
Cheap ... I'm unemployed!
Sound Quality with ability to be loud, but not excessive
Maximize trunk space so I don't have to pull it to carry luggage. Can still access spare tire.
Luckily I had basically all components laying about in garage from years ago. But even when purchased they were from ebay and usually a generation old, but often NOS. Basically all I spent $ on was the sub box materials and some wiring.
I went with a sealed ski pass design. If I was buying from scratch infinite baffle would make a lot of sense. May have more issues with rattles with the back wave in the trunk and need more power, but with our excellent trunk seal they sound great and you have all most all your trunk space.
I used WINISD to model my JLAudio 10W0-4 and it called for a 1.15 ft sealed box. Mine ended up right on that by maximizing width and height and going the minimum depth to fit the driver. Pic of box before install:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0CnSvCwqMCw/Ty8KANF6GRI/AAAAAAAAASQ/7k0_s5BIaKQ/s640/IMG_4604.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-9r4PLpdL1mA/Ty8JwTelg8I/AAAAAAAAAR4/qWWrFtL56kM/s640/IMG_4607.JPG
To maximize trunk space decided to mount an amp rack to the trunk roof. If buying new would look for a multichannel amp to fit in stock location.

Thanks man. It was more work than I thought! (what else is new :rolleyes) But right now I have the time. It was my first box and I only had a circular saw, a table saw would have helped a lot. Plus I put too much time into customizing the speaker cover to fit and to add a switched amber led. But it is fun when it is done to have some unique touches.
edit: No rattles in mine either with 190k miles. Well until recently. The slide adjusters for the top of the seat belt attachment on the B pillars just started rattling. If I move them or sometimes just push on them they usually stop. But it is irritating since it is right next to your ear! Trying to pull them apart and stuff some polyfill in there is on my never ending to-do list.

I have folding seats and no ski pass in my e46 ... the seats are always up. Even with the factory HK setup with subwoofers bolted to the underside of the trunk, it hits pretty damn hard ... with a decent aftermarket setup, even with the extra sheet metal of non-folding seats, I'd imagine you would have enough bass ... unless you're one of those people that likes having their rear view mirror falling off, windshield cracking etc from the bass.

It sucks to be honest.
I had 1 memphis 12" in my prelude and that rattled my brains. Now I put the same sub in the bimmer and its no where near as loud. Guess the trunk area is really sealed up. I even added a second amp and another 12" and right now its just about acceptable, but now I literally have ZERO trunk space.
Taking the rear speakers out might bring more bass in the cabin but personally I would rather have those speakers working.
keeslinger31
03-07-2012, 04:25 AM
ya my subs were loud but had to be turned up too high to hear good.
I removed them and my system sounds better because the rear speakers aren't fighting the subs, and its lighter

It actually made sense, the trunk was much more needed than the rear seats, having to pick up my girlfriend at the airport every 3-4 days (flight attendant), and it solved all the acoustic issues with the trunk being amost sealed in the convertible.
I think I'll just throw one small commercial subwoofer in the trunk just to give a little more punch, I'll keep the box somewhere, could become useful again in the mid-age crisis:buttrock

Not posted yet I see.
Stock Harman/Kardon sub.
In all my OEM fetishistsness, I retrofitted the complete system, because of OEM. ;)
It won't win any audio contests, but that is of course not the point here.
Got it for peanuts, together with the amp from a member here.
It fits nicely in the skipass, so it doesn't eat up any trunk space, which is already very limited.

If you are interested in mine, here is the full photo-story, as you'll see, it went through two big revisions in the last years.
Everything was done at home (actually IN the house sometimes), and before this I only did some minor works for the consolle of my previous car with fiberglass, I learnt a lot during the process...

Yea it was.
Luckily i had to just trim some metal from the inside in order for it to fit. The box was to big height wise. No way to remove it now without removing seats and amps. Lol.

NO rattle. when i first installed the subs the trunk, licence plate, rear bumper, front door locks, front door speaker enclosures, rear deck, weren't happy. so like a mad man, I put sheets of foam in between, in back of, in everything :D

Stupid question, but is it better to have the sub closer to the trunk, or farther away from the trunk?

It sucks to be honest.
I had 1 memphis 12" in my prelude and that rattled my brains. Now I put the same sub in the bimmer and its no where near as loud. Guess the trunk area is really sealed up. I even added a second amp and another 12" and right now its just about acceptable, but now I literally have ZERO trunk space.
Taking the rear speakers out might bring more bass in the cabin but personally I would rather have those speakers working.

You want them further away from the trunk if they're firing towards the rear. This gives the sound room and time to bounce back. (funny, I actually learned something in physics) keep the seats folded down (or put the back arm rest down). also your trunk will rattle like hell with the subs closer to the back. i've tried every sub position and this works the best. And don't point them towards the cabin....that's stupid...(looks cool but offers less bass)

Heres a question....
I know in my old 325is, i had a single box with a alpine type R in it and it kept sliding around the trunk.
What do you guys use to keep the box from sliding around?

If seen people use huge strips of industrial strength velcro. But you should try L brackets.

Yup, just stapled velcro squares to each corner on the bottom of the box, works like a charm.

Doesnt sound bad at all. Even for a convertible. I do have the trunk lined with some sound deadening mat. Even the license plate has material on the back :alright

Okay, finally finished my overkill daily driver trunk. haha.. The left side is just like the right with my components amp, same size and everything. Gotta love JL and showing my support in this one. bahaha I made it to accomodate the spare tire, so the actual speaker box is shaped all funky so I can take out the bottom panel and pull my spare wheel out if I ever need it. Dope, I know. Hell, I have to give myself some credit for all the work put into this damn thing. Oh yeah, it is black vinyl on black suede. Fancy shit guuuuuuys. Well anyway, enough rambling, tell me what you think! :buttrock

Thank you as well. I already want the newer version of these subs. Haven't looked at the specs, but they should be good on my box. I really want a w7 but that will call for a new amp sub combo. Maybe selling this setup to one of you e36 guys soon. Lol
