What a fun toy!
I will admit this car looks bizarre when approaching it, especially if you've seen Mr Bean in his car. But once you get near it, you start smiling, and the smile stays while you drive.
When you sit in this car, you feel like you should be ducking because the car is so small, but you actually have more room than an E36! We had a 6"1', 210lb guy in the back with no issues!

I tested the 4 cylinder without the blower, and it was peppy, especially after 4500 rpms. It's tight like a miniature BMW, and it handles like on rails!
The steering is go-cart sharp, and the brakes are of BMW standards...

We were winging this thing around turns like it was nothing. My M would have been squealing and slipping when this thing was already contimplating the next turn!
It weighs about 2300lbs, so the 116 hp feels higher. The SC version will have 160 hp. The proportions are interesting too, the width in relation to the length makes it the widest car out there! The sport version will have an even wider stance than the one I drove which I would have already considered sport inspired.
The neat thing is that these cars have been out in Europe for some time now, so lots of tuning components have been fabricated.

I looked over to my friend and suggested that it was not a "pickup chicks" kind of car. As I finished my sentence a woman was getting out of her red E46 just across the street from us at a traffic light.
She was smiling and said: "cool car"
I rolled my window down, and asked her thumbs up or down, she gave 2 up!!! Well that sort of shut me up...

We even had 2 friends who are Ferrari technicians for one of the big shops in our area come for a spin. Now these guys drive everything from F60s to F355 Challenge cars, and they both were like gitty children after a quick drive. The contagious smile had spread to two more victims.

The re-occuring line for the night was "Where and when can I get one!"
You can't go wrong for $18K!

That is sweet! I'd be steering my g/f towards one right now if she didn't have a compunction for larger-sized vehicles. Maybe I can finagle her to test drive one.

drool! I want one!!!
I read in R&D yesterday and some guy in the UK bought one and registered it in his 3-year old's name.

In 14 years, when she can drive, it will come out of storage for her. Now that's dedication!

Don't underestimate those minis... sure they aren't very powerful, but they don't have the extra weight of a 'normal' car to drag around.

I really gotta try one of these out. How was the shifter action? And the clutch feel?

if those things were RWD, I'd be in love. (want to do right-foot-down tail-out slides!!! stinking FWD Teg is ruining all my fun!)

too bad they are going to treat these suckers like the S2000 and New Beatle...mark up like a champ!:12:

I'd love to have one but it's gonna be crazy for the first two years.

Cool.. How'd you manage to get behind the wheel of a Mini?

I tested one earlier this year, superb handling on the Cooper, and quite nippy. In the UK their seems to be many modifications available, and becoming readily available, and the factory options DAMN theres so many!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well then good thing I won't be able to add one to the stable for two more years. Perfect timing. ;)

Well the front wheel drive helps you get through the turns pretty quick.
I am more of a rear wheel kind of guy, but here, he pushe the car in a long sweeper, and it under steered a little, but we were really pushing her! I thought she was going to tip over. :D

The shifting is easy and smooth. The big round shifter knob fills your hand well when you reach down for it. And most importantly it's within arms distance even when going into 5th. The S version will have a 6 speed!!!!!
When you shift, you hear the little flywheel spin when disengaged, then it reconnects once you let off the clutch. Like the Honda S2000, you need to wind this sucker out to feel the juice. But it is so much fun that you don't mind it.
The pedals are BMWesq, so you can toe heel this sucker all day.

This is totally an every day car...

The tac is is enormous, and sits right in the middle of the dash, so you Girl Friend will know exactly when you're pushing it too much.

When you move the steering wheel around, the rpm tac moves with it.. Kind of cool...

This car is made to weave easily through traffic, but the S would be nicer with my driving style.

Complaints:
Rear view Mirror was a little small.
Non sport version could use more contoured seats.
Keep in mind I also drove a pre-production car, so they may change a few things...

I am going to "copy" this thread to the MINI forum. It will be in both forums (General Discussions & MINI).

After I copy it any further posts will only go into whichever thread is used.
