Try from the outside and push the door in as u lift the Handel then pull out fairly quick. Might sound weird but it might work.

I've tried this.. the outside door handle just flops/moves up & down. It makes no contact with anything..

i'm thinking opening this door will take some kinda of manual operation of the door lock from the inside !

Your going to have to take off door panel, proceed as if you were installing a new actuator, and with a good mini led flashlight, take a look. I had this problem once, in my case, when you pull the door handle, there's a small hatch that is attached to the door, which could have fell out of place. In my case, I had to look at the other door to figure it out. I'm talking about the gold part of the end of both pictures. Near the letter S.

Thanks .. I'm way past that.. i've removed the handle and i'm familiar with the operation of the lock.. but it still wont open.. i've already picked up another 'actuator' assembly and door handle. The problem is that i can't open the door to remove the old one..there are 3 Torx screws that bolts it to the door.. and i have no way of accessing 2 of them ..

Hello SLICK92GSR!
I'm having the same problem: cannot access the 2 Torx screws that bolt the door lock to the door! Were you able to find a solution to open the door? Thank you

Can you open the door if both levers are not working?

If this works.... Way2LowE36 (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/member.php?374265-Way2LowE36) from the outside and push the door in as u lift the Handel then pull out fairly quick. Might sound weird but it might work.
This is your likely problem. The door latch has three levers inside. The one that is a problem is the thing that holds the door closed it is spring loaded and will sometimes not retract. The door handles just lift a cam to allow this latch to retract. The last is the door lock that keep the lever in the closed position. Spraying with a light oil may help, If the spring is broken you need to replace.

You may also have a broken outside handle so you might need to use the inside door handle and pull then push open the door.

Thanks for your prompt response gc325is! In fact, I finally realized the outside door handle lever was disengaged from the door lock and positioned between the door lock lever where it should go (the one with the hole in it) and the door panel. It thus prevented the door lock lever from moving properly. I managed to push the lock lever towards the back of the door with a large screwdriver and the door handle just snatched into it. It now works fine!!!
