View Full Version : help identifying camshafts m50/s50/m52/s52 which one is it?

so heres the deal, a couple weeks ago I purchased these and the seller stated these were s50 cams, well the more research i do the more confusing it gets so im hoping someone will give me a hand figuring out what exactly these are?

Ive been using this thread for comparison but im getting mixed signals-

a few notes that ive gathered so far-
1-s50 cams are round the entire shaft, these are counter balanced like m52/s52- is this statement true?
2-the cam lobes themselves look to sharp to be s50/s52, they look like m52 to me.
3-the journals on m52 cams span the entire length of the opening vs s52/s50 do not, they stop and have a gap on either side like the ones i have??
4- the spot where you could grab it with a wrench on m50/s50 cams is towards the rear while m52/s52 is in the center( like mine)

* also want to note that the exhaust cam is hollow and the intake cam is not.

so far what im gathering is that these are leaning towards m52 cams, hopefully s52. what do you guys think?

Based on the shape of the lobes and the location of the hex, I'd say m52.

yea it looks like it, I finally got an email from the seller after 6 days...

hello, i emailed you a few days ago looking for some solid awnsers on which
cams these are, they definitely are NOT s50 cams! please email me back soon
or ill just open a case with ebay/paypal and get my money back that way.

ps- i forgot to mention that the plastic cover for the intake cam
was all busted up when it arrived, i figured i would just re-use mine but
since it looks like i might have to send these back to you i better mention
it now so you dont think it happened on the way back to you.

car has an m3 motor. im not sure if he was lying or not cause like i said
im not a car expert. btw i never stated they were s50 cams. as the title
says m/s50 so that means it could be either one. try them first see how
they perform before u start threatening me

They are 1996-1999 M52 2.8L camshafts. I can say that for sure. I went trough the same deal, guy sold me M52 cams as S52, I opened paypal despute and got my money back

The guy says he's no car expert but he's doing a motor swap on his BMW? His title clearly said M/S50 kit. Nowhere did he state that it was either/or. Dishonest seller for sure. I do think that you should have emailed him first to find out if it was they were M50s or S50s. His auction is very subjective.

This is exactly what i was thinking ,ive been laughing about how dumb it all sounds most of the day but im not worried about it paypal is real good about stuff like this or atleast has been in the past. Thanks for the help guys:buttrock

Wow what a total liar, with the evidence you can bring forward you will get you're money back. Chances are he also just fucked his 100% positive feedback because he deserves to loose it for miss advertisement.

These are NOT m50 or s50 cams, there m52 camshafts out of 96-99 2.8 e36 which is not even close to what you stated they were.

are you willing to offer me a refund?

how is that possible. i sent a a single vanos unit as you can tell. m52 is
a dual vanos and doesnt have an exhaust cam gear like the one you bought from me
you realy dont know what you are talking about. m52 are all dual vanos.
look it up then get back to me.

well as of this morning I have a full refund of the purchase price plus ebay paid for shipping back so i didnt lose anything but time.The kicker is, in the middle of all of this the guy moved from NY to AZ and closed his bank accts linked to his paypal so his refund was declined twice! after i called ebay and told them they informed me that my refund will actually come from them and they will go after this doucher for the money and any other legal stuff. :cool
