Hey guys. so im a noob here on the forums. I have a 1995 325i. I just signed up hoping to get some advice. So about a few weeks ago i was driving on the highway and was in third gear. It was about to redline so i shifted but instead of going into 4'th gear, it slipped back into 2 and the engine rpm's went to like 9000 (even though the max on the gauge is 7000). I took it apart with some buddies and one of the pistons is literally chopped in half sitting here next to me. The others didnt look like they blew up but there are other problems such as all the valves are bent and the head is basically trashed. So im pretty sure that fixing all this would be a waste of a lot of money and not much gained. So i was thinking of either selling the engine for scrap metal or parting out the engine parts. What do you guys think?

I'm thinking the entire engine is pretty much scrap. If the valves aren't bent too much there is a possibility to be able to sell the head to someone who has overheated and cracked the head. If the bent valves have damaged the valve seats and valve guides then the head is trash as well.
If it wasn't for overheating and money shifts, these engines would live forever!

Nope but you can probably get $50 scrap metal out of it. Whole cars are only bringing $300 scrap. You can sell the stuff on the outside like the manifold, injectors, alt, a/c compressor but you might want to hold onto those until you get another engine. They don't always come with all the bolt on stuff.

Yup... our 99' 323is was quoted at $350 "salvage value" when it got totaled.
Best bet to get any kind of cash from that engine is to part out what you can first, then scrap it.

Get a used motor and learn how to shift properly. 3rd to 4th is always done with your palm away from you.

first car i had was a renault 19 '92 green...work great it was like a car thats 2 or 3 years old max..in 2009 till one day in 2nd gear at 2k rpm engine died whit no warning...timing belt snap'd turn the key and i could hear the piston smahing on the valves...i know that now but i had no ideea what that sound was then...so engine was gone something like yours...it was not worth a engine swap..i sold it of for parts
hmm...i use to have a green '92 renault 19 now i have a green '92 bmw 318i...not what this thread is about but can anyone tell me if it has a timing belt or chain?
