Hey all,

retarded question here but i need help. When it comes to a car i have no problem finding tires and such but my wife and i aquired a Ford Edge that is coming up on needing tires. My main question is, is it okay to run a normal passenger car/all season tire on a crossover? its nothing huge like a suburban or traverse since its only the size of a family sedan. for example: i run Falken ZE-912s on my daily mazda3 sedan and that tire is available in a 245/65/18 for the Edge. It only has a 480 treadware rating compared to the Conti OE tires of like 640 i believe. I just need to know if it matters when running a tire i have on a car vs suv/crossover with the tread wearing, load of the car etc since the falkens are like 118 a piece and the conti's/ any SUV or crossover tire are like 166.00 an up. i wasnt pleased with the Conti Crosscontact LX. and one a side note, FordEdgeforums.com are not helpful and the reviews im finding for Edge's are literally 99% OE tires and i want an alternative. Thanks for your help tire guru's. i always appreciate any help i get on here

Some SUVs use what are, in effect, 'regular' all-season tires (like my Lexus RX350). If you are never going to 'off-road' the vehicle, and if the weight capacity of your tires is sufficient (check the 'load' rating - should be at least as high as the OEM tires), in my opinion you can very well use 'regular' all-season tires. You could also call tirerack (find tel. no. at tirerack.com) and ask the question from one of their 'experts'. Good luck!

I am not sure I would go with a 245/65R18. You are raising the height of the vehicle throwing off the speedometer, odometer and gear ratio. Car tires in the 245/60R18 will have enough load capacity for the vehicle. Take a look at the Yokohama Avid Envigor at 149.00 each. They are all season with very good handling and tread life. They should also give you better fuel economy.
If I can help let me know.

Thanks Jim,

I will double check but the stock tires are 245/65/18. we dont have the 16" option but the SEL package with the premium wheels for a 2007 model before they offered the 20" package. If/when we order tires, you can ship directly to a Hibdon Tire Plus in Yukon, OK 73099 right? I just prefer to have it done there by the house for rotate/bal free :D

EDIT: oops sorry it is 245/60/18 not 65

this is what i found.

Yoko Avid
Treadwear: 560
Traction: A
Temperature: A560 A A
2039 lbs.
51 psi
11/32"
32 lbs.

OE Conti Contact LX
Treadwear: 680
Traction: A
Temperature: B680 A B
1984 lbs.
44 psi
12/32"
35 lbs.

Falken ZE912
Treadwear: 480
Traction: A
Temperature: A
2039 lbs.
51 psi
10/32"
34 lbs.

looks like the Falken can handle the load but the tread rating is "better" by yoko standards. My only complaint is the YOKO rubber tends to wear faster than others so their own rating is different than others i suppose.

That is incorrect. Yokohama and all tire mfg's do make tires that will wear faster but they also all make tires that wear better. The Envigor has a 60K mileage warranty. I can ship to the installer for you. Shipping time is 2 to 3 working days.
If I can help let me know.
