I have a 1997 328is with M3 Forged Double Spoke wheels. They are staggered 7.5x17 front / 8.5x17 rear. The factory recommends 225/45 front tires and 245/40 rear tires for these wheels.
I purchased the car with Toyo Proxes T1 235/40 on the front and Toyo Proxes T1-S 235/40 on the rear. The front tires are cracking from the shoulder up the sidewall. The cracks start between the blocks in the tread and curve around the shoulder. They are up to about an inch long. They're getting worse so I want to replace the tires. The rear tires are almost new.
I would like to move the rear tires to the front and replace the rear tires with 245/40 tires. However, according to Toyo, the recommended rim size for the 235/40 is 8/8.5/9.5, which is the same as for the 245/40. (I can't imagine putting those tires on 9.5 inch rims. They are too narrow for the 8.5 inch rims. Are the front tires cracking because the rim is too narrow?
The alternative is to leave the smaller than stock tires on the rear and replace the front tires with the recommended tires.
Does anyone have experience running T1-S 235/40 on 7.5x17 rims? Is this tire too wide for the 7.5 rim?
Thanks in advance.
