A friend of mine has a 93 525i. The obc worked fine for a few months. then stopped, and every once in a while it comes on and works until you turn the car off. Hes thinking about buying a new one and see if it fixes the problem. any advice?

Look up how to remove the OBC.
Once it is removed check the plug connector in the back of the housing to make sure its not loose.
When the OBC goes out does anything else stop working? if so check the fuses.
that's all I can think of...need more detail really.

Mine did that once. Don't remember what I did that worked. I changed some fuses, adjusted the dimmer switch, and slapped it. My money's on the pimp fix.

just give it a strong push backwards.. it is getting cold and this causes the plastic to warp thus loosening the connection. That is usually the problem.

Hang on...
Are you talking about the OBC in the dash directly next to the radio(it displays the time).
OR
Are you talking about the CCM display in the instrument cluster under the speedometer(it tells you what is wrong with the car).

You saying this tells me that the bulbs in the OBC are burnt out. P Lease see this for replacement:

YOu need the bulbs that have a black base, NOT the turqoise based bulbs in the 3rd link. Make sure you follow procedures if you have an airbag and also KNOW YOUR RADIO CODE.

Something like this:
http://www.lehrmangroup.com/rickard/airBagAndBulbs.html
you must also wait 10 mins. after disconnecting the battery.
