So this morning while in traffic I look down and see my engine is reving at 300 rpm. I tell myself that this is impossible since the car seems fine, so I start off again and the rev counter only go between 0 and 1000 rpm... Now it's the first time it's been rly Cool outside (-7). This is the first time this has happened, the rest of the instrument are ok, so what's the problem because I have no idea at all

Does it happen when you turn the HIDs on?

Capacitors are in the cluster. Just google "E34 cluster capacitors", you should get a couple of good hits.
Sometimes an HID kit will reveal an upcoming bad capacitor issue that you haven't encountered yet.
On my previous 530i/5, I installed an HID kit and there were no issues what so ever. I then did the entire 540i swap into it, including the cluster, after that my tach would have a mind of it's own. It would run normal most of the time, but when the car is cold it will either half or double my RPM reading on the tach until the car is warm and the engine is restarted. My original cluster never had an issue like that, with everything else being the same.
The problem that was with my cluster up above was only there when I would turn on the HIDs. If no lights are on, then I would never encounter the issue.
Wrapping the HID ballast in foil and relocating the ballast down into the bumper helped a lot, but the problem would still arise once in a while, which leads back to the cluster being an issue.
