View Full Version : What's this lamp connector in engine compartment for?
Only seems to be on driver's side.

Can't find the equivalent on the pass. side, though maybe it's buried and I just can't see it.
[edit:] seemingly same part (i.e. same connector) here though, connected:

Does your car have euro trim from you or a PO? I have those in my engine bay since I installed euro trim and don't have the US bumper lights anymore.

No euro trim. I've had the car basically since new. Parking, head, and fog lamps are hooked up and work.
headlight adjustment motors? :S
I don't know? I've got North American reflector-type head lamps (as opposed to ellipisoids) but thought the motorized adj. motors were an option that I didn't have. Maybe it was wired for it, I don't know.
outside thermometer connection?
I don't know much (if anything) about the car's thermo., but I know it's giving me correct readings inside, so I assume it's hooked up properly. Does the outside thermo connection take a connector like this?
Thanks to everyone who's chimed in with ideas. I appreciate it. This one has had me curious for a while.

Outside temp sensor is located by the covers next to the driver side foglamp. Mine is yellow. Put a tested on it and see if it even fires up when ignition is on. Might be a connector for the engine bay lighting on the inside part of the hood. Other than that, I have no clue.

will do.

I know it's not engine bay lamp (which works), but thanks for the guess.

I wondered about this too. I found it when I installed my smilies-was hoping it was for the city lights (same connector) but no. They're being fed from what were the side bumper lights now that the euro trim is on.

Look at the color of the wiring and look it up in the Bentley manual. I can see a brown wire and the connector looks like part# 61 13 1 378 418 which is NLA. You should be able to see the last seven #s on the back side of the connector. These were usually found on fog lamps and the city lights on the Euro smileys. They also made the same connector in blue which is also NLA.

I'll check the part no. on the connector and the color of wires. The connector does look like one of the ones that's still available. Shogun was kind enough to send me this list when I got my euro lamps from Schmiedmann:

Some of these connectors were listed as NLA according to the guys at getbmwparts.com. Shogun told me that some of these connectors would indeed be listed as NLA but they were still available from BMW Germany. I told the guys from Tischer that, and they ended up placing the order (despite the NLA tag) and all the parts eventually came in.
Anyway, some of those connectors look like the connector in question at the beginning of this thread. I'll double check part no. on that too and post when I have that info.

I've tried to get the 418s from the Fatherland and they are NLA. I had to alter some 417s to work on my smileys. So if you come across some 418s get a few extra for me, I'd be more than happy to pay you for them. They also put the 418s on the E39. so if you see one in a scrap yard grab 'em.
I'll check it out. I've got my receipt somewhere around here. I bought these in the last year. Maybe they weren't the 418, but rather a superseded part or a diff. part altogether.

There is one on the passenger's side too. When you have your bumper off you'll find it. It is zip tied to the body and comes from the same wire bundle as the fogs and bumper marker. Mine are capped off.
Would they have anything to do with the headlight washing option?

Heater connector for headlight washers?

Thank's for the info on the pass. side equivalent. That's what had me stumped. I couldn't find it. I'm taking off front bumper and a few other goodies to replace a few cracked pieces and missing fasteners when I put on my new Hella headlamps, so I'm sure I'll find it then.
By the way, part no. for connector is 418, and wires are (1) white and 1 (brown).
Did the '91 North Americans have the headlamp washer option? My initial guess was that the wiring for the early E34's were shared with the E32. Maybe that's a way-off guess. Either way, I'd like to know :)
PS. This part ( 61 13 1 378 418 ) doesn't show up in realoem for the 2/91 build date. It does show up for the E30 (M20 engine -- though my engine is an M30) and the E39 (as indicated above).

I ordered and received 419 yellow and it is not keyed the same. The 418 is keyed the same as the 402 but is for 90 degree wire fitment rather than straight wire 402 fitment

Its the connector for the intensive headlight washer motor. All e34 have them. The 525i, 530i and 540i have them on the other side.
Robert: just coming back to thread and found your reply. Thanks for that. Thanks too to everyone else who posted little nuggets of wisdom and info in this thread. Haven't had much time to work on this car lately, but I love researching all this esoteric (to me) stuff.
