I was able to tap it to get to work for awhile but now its out for good

Seeing as you could tap on it to get it to work I would guess you have a problem somewhere in the cluster.

There is also a fuse, #20 or 21 (one of the 20's can't remember) that controls the speedo, mph guage, odometer, and the OBC.
When that fuse blows you lose the speedo, mpg guage, odo, and the obc will get really dim.

If all the fuses are good swap in a new speedo.
