Hey guys im going crazy figuring this out! Ive got a 1996 328is that is hesitating at idle and vibrating the whole car like crazy.Sometimes it will smooth out for like 20 seconds and do it again. I changed the maf changed the throttle body gasket, valve cover gasket, cleaned the ccv and icv, inspected all the hoses under the manifold for cracks or leaks and everything looks fine. It runs and drives but feels very slow with no power. It only vibrates and hesitates at idle also exhaust is making wierd noises but i think its related.I am getting new o2 sensors in a couple days and will post results. The codes i am getting are p1188 p1189 p0170 p0173 I dont know what to do at this point. If there is anything you guys can think of let me know please!

My 240 did that and it was worn piston rings creating bad compression and oil consumption

P1188 and P0170 are the same thing.
P1189 and P0173 are the same thing.
P1188 is FUEL CONTROL MALFUNCTION, BANK 1. P1189 is the same thing, except Bank 2. Bank 1 is the bank that includes the #1 cylinder, Bank 2 is the bank that does not include the #1 Cylinder.
P0170 and P0173 are FUEL TRIM MALFUNCTION, Bank 1 and Bank 2, respectively. Fuel Trim and Fuel Control are like potato and potahto. Same thing.
When my car - daughter's car, really - had these codes, I also had a random P0100 MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR ERROR, and a crapload of misfire codes. The random MAF code turned out to be the key. The mechanic used his BMW Diagnostic Software connected to the car's Data Link Connector to find that the MAF had a transistor gate shorted to ground.
The MAF was telling the computer that the air density was changing from dense to thin, and back again -- all while the air was not changing at all. The fuel delivery was chasing the air density to maintain 14.7:1 air:fuel ratio. The O2s were seeing the fuel move in a wide range, and tell the computer to make a change. Eventually, the O2s reported, "no mattter what we say, you cannot fix the problem." And this translates to MALFUNCTION.
You need the BMW Diagnostics plugged into the DLC, and SPECIFICALLY look at the things the MAF has to say.

i wanted to fix this issue without going to the dealer but that was my last option LOL!
