i've got an '86 that's been well maintained but at 100,000 miles, it needs a brake job and calipers rebuilt. how do i tell if the brakes have been upgraded to 750/540 or similar? i plan to buy the ireland kit if they haven't been, but dont want to do all that if it isn't needed. looks stock except for the ATE slotted rotors, but i'm not sure.

SWEEET, thanks. i'm ordering the upgrade kit.
i found the numbers 57 25 on the calipers. reading the upgrade pdf from bmwi34.net, i found out that the numbers refer to the caliper diameter and rotor thickness. this would be oem. the 750 is 60mm calipers and 28mm rotors. now to buy upgrade kit, 14piece meyle suspension kit and new bilstien hd's... i may have to re-register my car as a 2011!! it will ride like new (or better ;)

57 is the hat height and 25 is the rotor thickness.
The E31 calipers I used to have and the E32 calipers I replaced them with had the rotor diameter, hat height and rotor thickness embossed on the them.

Excellent info.
Is this what I want for my rear upgrade? Seems like a good deal at BMA...

Yep, that's them. That's the left only.
I use and recommend TRW Lucas pads. They take almost as much heat as race pads but still work from cold and are low dust. Good feel too.

Before you order suspension pieces you should think about buying my used ones :)
They only have about 5k miles on them, I redid the entire suspension not long before I stopped driving it. Including M5 aluminum control arms.
I do have some brand new stock control arms too.

Great. I just looked it up for reference (hence only showing one side). I already have the fronts (750). I had no idea that you can have refurbs for $40 each (750 front and 540 rears alike).
I will look into TRW pads.

I wish I could get them for $40 here.

ordered the suspension kit yesterday.
Upper thrust arms with 750il bushings, lower aluminum m5 upgrade control arms, complete tie rod assembly L/R/Center, sway bar links, idler arm, rear pitman arms, rear subframe mounts. All meyle HD. seems to be the consensus best choice. Also ordered a new brake bomb and misc parts from AutohausAZ. Havent jumped on the brake kit or shock/struts yet.
upper strut mounts have been mentioned as well. are they necessary or likely overkill. i'm leaning to staying a tad softer than the HD/s (claimed to be 20% stiffer than stock)

I agree with the Meyle setup quality. Although, Lemfoeder is supposed to be better if you have $$$ to burn.
