Hi all,

Im looking for some help with inpa, iv been searching this forum for some answers but there is just so much out there.
Im running inpa 5.02, and trying to use it with a d-can usb cable.
I do not have a serial port on my laptop that is why I bought a usb d-can cable.
The inpa program runs fine and iv used it a lot on none d-can cars but when trying to communicate with d-can it just wont work, I keep getting a error message saying controler not found.
I have been through the install several times and changed the settings in the .ini file as per the install instructions.
Do I need to use the belkin adapter that is only available from america? this would then mean changing the d-can cable at the same time to a serial cable.
Iv been trying on and off for over a year to get this to work but it just wont work with d-can, and now with cars getting older there is more and more with the d-can.

Any help will be great, whillis

I think you need a special USB BMW cable. Just a standard D-Can USB won't work - INPA does not even use d-can depending on the car model. A D-Can cable will only allow you to access ECUs through normal OBD - but that's not what you need here.

trying some belkin adapter etc will most probably also not work, since these INPA compatible cables are really different. What I never tried was to use WFI or Bluetooth Adapter -> serial and then use a INPA RS232 cable. But getting these two adapters might well be more expensive than just a USB->OBD Inpa cable.

ps I have read that the new BMWs even need Ethernet connection - not D-Can - but I am not sure since I have never tried it myself yet.

You need the K + D Can utility for starters, have a search for my post on this forum on this. It gives a link to downlads & instructions. You need to install the USB to serial port as a Com5 port & change the port in odb.ini to com5 in order for it to work.
Run the MS DOS utility that you download from the links in the post.

Actually here is the thread with the post:

That's some good advise guys, I'm gonna give it a shot at the weekend. I'm going to rebuild the laptop then reinstall everything.
