Unfortunately I live in the city right now and don't have a very good place to work on my car. So I end up paying for parking at some underground parking lot and doing work on my car there if it so happens that it's raining or cold out. Sometimes I get strange looks when people come over and ask if I need a boost only to see the internals of my car lined up on the concrete next to me. Does anyone else do this? Anyone else work on their cars in odd places

I drive the ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE, I never have to do anything...

I do 95% of my work on the car, at a prior shop I use to work for

I live a few blocks from downtown Houston. I choose to live in apts due to the high property taxes here, a house closeby would cost me just in taxes and fees what I pay in rent, no thanks! The downside is that I dont have a garage. :( I did rent a storage unit for cheap in my complex, and its become a small shop for all my tools and spare parts.

We have a 6 story parking garage, and management is cool with us car guys work on our cars in the garage, as long as we stick to the 5th floor (covered) or 6th floor (roof). :D I've done many oil changes, wheel bearings, brake jobs, and other small repairs in the garage, as well as a complete A/C rebuild on my Impala.

I know most of the car guys in our complex, and we've had a few car meets on the roof. Nothing like waxing and polishing, spark plug jobs, oil changes, and other small repairs, all while drinking beer, and with a view of downtown haha.

Here's my view from my "garage" :D

Jeez, that must stink to have to do your work in a parking garage. I guess I am really fortunate to have my work warehouse to do all my odd jobs in.

That's too awesome!

I do pretty much everything in my garage, or if I can't tackle the issue one of my good friends runs a "garage" out of his home 3 miles away. We can fix anything in there.

Changed a starter on my back in coin-op DIY car wash, in January, laying in slush.
Your solution seems resourceful enough. No complaints from garage owner?

Under the building where I work there's an underground parking lot, so I can go to work in the morning, pay for parking, and then after work go and work on my car. Last thing I did was adjusting the intake and exhaust valves. No complaints so far.

That's a pretty awesome clandestine car repair. I've done a water pump in an apartment complex parking lot that had rules against that sort of thing. But in a coin-op is a whole 'nother level. Kudos. :)

It was that or push a '67 Chrysler New Yorker home.

Me and one of my neighbors and fellow BMW owner were planning on getting a large enough storage unit close to our complex, would have cost each of us $50-75 a month but we could pull our cars in and work on them as we wanted. He got transferred to a new city right after we talked about it, doh.

Oh yeah, and a guy I know from a GM forum recently moved down here and bought a house, and an old E30. We both now have high-mileage GMs and low-mileage BMW's lol. He's a member here too, probably going to help him work on his car and do some work on mine at his place.

Around me in the downtown area, there are a good 20 shops, with the majority specializing in European cars. If I ever have a problem, hopefully I can make it the 5+ blocks to a shop lol.

I thought about renting a storage unit as well. If you know one of the Navy guys around here ,and they are willing to do you a favour, you can get into their garage and have access to every tool imaginable as well as lifts. They rent them out to the navy guys to fix thier own cars for some thing ridiculous like 5$

Dont think there are any bases close to Houston. Where my parents live in MS, there are a few close by, but then their house and all my dad's tools are there too haha. My dad just bought some land and is going to build a shop with a lift, too bad its 400 damn miles away and I almost never go home! :(

Back in 2004, I almost did an interior swap with a guy in the air force. If I would have driven to Pensacola, he was going to rent out their auto shop and tools, and also get me a hotel room on base. Didnt really like the condition of his driver's seat, so I had to pass.

My Impala has a blown head gasket, I'm almost considering renting a 15x30 unit for 1-2 months and working on it as I have time. I'm upgrading to a supercharged engine, and basically everything under the hood and the fuel and brake lines have to be replaced. Need to talk to a shop, I'd rather have somebody do the hard work, but 1k+ in labor is a bitch too.

I recently moved from a house with a garage to a condo. I do minor work in the condo garage, messy work in the boat-trailer parking lot next door, bigger jobs in my friend's driveway, and really big jobs in another friend's shop.
