My Bmw has a strange problem.

On start up when I pull away when the car goes to change to the 2nd gear the car alsmot jolts forwards. It feels like it is being pushed from the back and jolting forward.

Once the car has moved through the gears a few times it doesnt do it at all. It is only when it first changes gear.

Any ideas?

First off, my car used to do this a lot too.

It would seem to jolt forward the moment i press the clutch pedal down to change from first to second, and only if the car is cold.

Now, this used to happen when I lived on a busy street and so I would need to accelerate immediately after I start my car and get going. Now where I live, the car is parked in a large parking structure/parking lot area. So most of the driving the car goes through when it is first started up is low speed/more clutch slip. Perhaps the clutch or transmission just needs to warm up first before you start driving it harder.

Is this an auto or manual tranny? If its an auto tranny have you checked your fluid level lately?

ita an Auto. I'll check fluid tonight.

def lack of fluid in the auto.
with the 323 auto when we first got it, it seemed the shift only between first and 2nd gave a little jolt/clunk at time between first and second, as if it was some slop.
when i did a trans service, found it was down on fluid by approx 2-3 Litres as most dont quite know how to fill these transmissions properly.
