It doesn't happen during every acceleration and it happens at the most random times. The noise itself lasts only a second. Its much louder and deeper sounding than a squeak, almost like metal scraping together (but no grinding noise). I thought it might be the transmission, but the car only has 62,000 miles on it. A while ago I was feeling a slight knocking while coasting and clicking when turning the wheel. However it has been months since i felt that problem. Is that a noise a bad cv joint or control arm bushings could make?

Could have torn boots up front since it's an XI which would let in all kinds of crud around the front axle which will then cause it to fail.

Get under and inspect the boots, the bushings, the ball joints, as they are all prone to failure at around 60,000 miles or so.

Edit: also next time post your questions in the E46 (that is your model of car) section. You will get better responses in there.

Thanks for the feedback! Whats aggravating is I took it to the dealer a few months ago when I started having the clicking/ knocking problem (before the squeaking). It was so intermittent that they did not diagnose anything during the road test they took it on. Would they have checked the under-body even if they didn't hear the noises I was hearing?
