I don't blame him for asking the question again.. Those threads are long
and mostly anecdotal in nature. Would be nice to see a thread that
summarizes all those threads into a readable one.

From my reading.. The mobil 1 euro 0w-40 version is popular as is the Shell
Rotella syn branded oil. Lots of opinions out there on the subject. Just follow at a minimum whats in the owners manual.. Most oils today are very good..

If you want to know about what oil to use go to bobistheoilguy.com and get the real story rather than lots of personal, and often uninformed, opinions.

Since winters coming up id get into the habit of using 0w XX oils

Im using mobil 1 0w40 at the moment w/ no problems at all! Previously used 0w30 in my old motor and eventually ran into blow-by problems! Not sure if the 30 weight had any influence on the internal failure but it turns out 40 weight is whats recommended!

Mobil 1 0W-40; have used it for at least 60k combined in my 3 E36 cars. Usually you can find it for around $5-$6 a quart on sale

The best oil is a brown/gold liquid, and comes in a bottle or a jug. It's usually synthetic, and it gets changed about every 5K-7.5K miles along with the filter.

Other than that, there is no "BEST" brand.

If you have a Sears around you (and if they have the 0W-40) there is a sale on Mobil1 at the moment for $5.49 right now.

If not, Autozone has a deal for 5 quarts + Mobil1 filter (unfortunately my stores do not stock the E36 filter but I buy one for my wife's Burb) for $32.99.

Alternatively, Walmart always sells 0W-40 for around $6 something a quart.

And this thread is going to be ANY DIFFERENT how?

I think he was suggesting that you do.

Seriously. There is nothing new to add that hasn't been discussed countless times in the recent past. Do a little better searching and don't use your phone as an excuse for lack of.
I was at work, and going to grab the oil on the way home, so I used my phone, not that big of a deal.

IMO, I only use BMW 5w-30 Fullsynthetic performance oil from the dealer and its cheaper than store bought stuff, it comes to like 5-6$ and change a qrt. where castrol edge and mobile 1 are like 6-8$ a qrt. plus read the API rating mobile one is to thin no matter what weight, as i was told by lots of BMW mechanics , even the ending weight being a large number it still isnt thick enough.

BMW oil is made by Castrol, so GC 5W30 == BMW 5W30

Lubro Moly synthoil, 0w40 or 5w40 depending on your climate. This stuff is amazing, and is a true class 4 FULL synthetic. My car ran noticeably smoother and burned less after switching from garbage mobil 1 to this. Ecstuning has it for a good price. http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E36-M3-S52_3.2l/Maintenance/Engine/Oil/ES258725/

German Castrol is 0W-30 and superior to what they sell at BMW.

There are plenty of threads with oil information.
Add up how many different brands and weights so far in this thread. Nothing new has been mentioned and we're back to square one... a bunch of opinions on oil for every damn brand... again, and again, and again.

Wrong

Am I? My information came from a BMW district parts manager (buddy of mine for several years, not sure why he would give me incorrect info, but it happens...), though it was 4-5 years ago. The oil for my E46 M3 was supposed to be made for BMW by Castrol, as was their other oils sold for other cars. While they may be "special" formulations they were made by Castrol and packaged for BMW. If I am laboring under a misconception or bad information please correct me.

BMW branded oil is made by Castrol, but the German Castrol is 0W-30 and has been proven to be superior and thicker than a 5W-30. This is on bob the oil guy site and this thread should go in the pooper.

Bout to change my oil tomorrow... currently running Mobil 1 Full Syn 15w-50.... It's about to start getting cold here in Florida, so I'm thinking of changing it up and going with a thinner oil.... Any of you guys in the South or Warm climates do this when it gets chilly down here? What do you use?

Why are people assholes

because this is like asking what are the best tires?
what is the best car?
what is the best color?

you gotta be fricken kidding me...

Brett was right.. you are going to get 101 different answers and never get the "right" answer. Do your own research (i.e. SEARCH) and then come to your own conclusion based on your own usage...

The "best" oil for a street driven car in the south (10-40) may not be the "best" for a street driven car in the north (0-30) or a race car that sees repeated abuse (15-50)

I'm not saying those are the best, but for MY uses in those areas, would be what I use

If it's approved by BMW or at least meet the required spec for your specific engine, then it should be proper and best oil for you. If your car is burning oil, get whatever proper oil that can be easily obtained from your nearest auto parts store unless you want to stock up..
