I need some expert advise!

Seems like corrosion or some kind of build up along with rust and chips.

I know chrome cant be touched but how do these look?

I'm not trying to get them to be showroom finish, just cleaned up enough and prevent any further chipping/damaging.

It's always hard to tell with chrome in photos, but it looks like there is quite a bit of brake dust / grime there that can be cleaned up. There looks to be some bubbling or chipping there, although it's hard to tell from the pic and those wheels should be aluminum. I'm not sure that chrome itself can rust or not. Any rust / bubbling / chipping will not be able to be cleaned up short of stripping the wheels down and refinishing them.

chrome can be removed by reversing the process, but it just as expensive and chroming a wheel....

Those wheels have been neglected for way too long to do anything now. Sell them to someone who doesn't care and buy a new set. As Kindrye said, it's an expensive process to remove chrome.

You could have the chrome removed and then painted.

Anything can be fixed. All it takes is $$$

I just talked to LA Wheels about this very same thing. To have Z3 M roadstar 17 inch wheels with failing chrome stripped and rechromed will be $948 with shipping, $748 if dropped off. The extra set I have were used by someone as winter wheels and need to be totally redone.
