I was thinking the same thing...that they're kind of interesting-looking in a not-bad, those-might-grow-on-me kind of way. But I'm guessing that the difference between pics and real life is probably pretty marked, and, yeah, if OP was looking the same color on all 4 wheels...mission not accomplished. :rofl

Not if the powdercoater knows what they are doing. It is possible to ruin an aluminum wheel by baking it at too high a temperature.

kinda mixed on this one.....look "kinda funky"....but also looks kinda "woody" (like a Model T's wood wheels)...havta see in real life, as finish looks good to me (nice & smooth, no curb rash, etc)....if color was incorrect based on original invoice you have a case, o/wise sounds like whining.....

Dude - what happened was that the sungold or sun yellow is a two stage powder. They didn't let the wheel cool totally. Any hot spots on the wheel after the first coat (the gold) started curing the clear as they were laying it down. Thus the whacky shades of color.

That sucks.

BUT DONT FEAR

Don't pay $30 to strip the wheels (thats a rip btw). Go to pep boys, autozone, etc., and get yourself a jug of aircraft remover. You can get the jug or the spray cans but you'll need a fair amount of spray cans. Since the parts have already been powder coated, stripping it is CAKE. Simply spray or brush on the aircraft remover liberally and it will literally fall off.

Here is a part I did silver and decided to change last minute:

http://jonkensy.com/gallery/albums/uploads/strip3.jpg

I do a bunch of powder coating - if you need any advice or want some references for places to send to (that are affordable) PM me.

Two things:

1. You brought this on yourself. What color should I paint my wheels? Hmmm... Yellow. That is totally not a horrid color to paint a set of wheels, nope not at all.

2. They did indeed do a horrible job painting your rims a horrible color. What you have right now is shit squared. It's shit times shit. You could improve them by wiping your ass with them.

I thought powder coating rims weakened them?

Yeah, another one of the "real vs fake" rims myths. If it weakened them then OEM's wouldn't bake their finishes ;) A ton of OEM wheels come powder coated with a gel coat that has to cure at a higher temperature than the powder itself. Its bunk bro.

(Actually, above is what I initially was thinking when reading post. 1. WHO paints their wheels YELLOW?? Even pic of said target wheel looks hideous in that color. & Can't top #2 above....well stated.)

I'm very well versed on powders. The only "sun gold" color offered is sun gold metallic from eastwood. You can see the metallic flake in the finish he posted but it was over-cured because they hit it on a hot wheel without keeping the wheel uniformly hot or not letting the whole wheel cool to room temp. The clear/gold started to flow out prematurely.

Here is what it should look like properly cured:

http://jonkensy.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/sgm.JPG

:shifty

The above pic has a matte clear

Sounds like the powder shop he chose just sucks. But, I've had it happen to me too.

http://jonkensy.com/gallery/albums/uploads/redtubes1.jpg

Note how the cast part of the strut housings (which retains heat the most) is darker than the thinner metal tubing portions. I tried to rush 5 sets of strut housings through the oven all at once and thought they cooled enough but they didn't. (That example is a little awkward because its showing the darker red but also silver. I used a dormant powder that actually lays down silver/chrome, and when the clear is applied a chemical reaction pulls the color pigments up and to the top. The silver spots are spots where the metal was hotter than the dark spots. Super annoying.)

Sun gold metallic is a PBP color, not eastwood. EW powder (for the most part) sucks. Sun gold metallic shoots gold (not translucent or candy) and can be cleared but does not have to be. It does appear to be a 2 stage that they used, but Im pretty sure the color variation is in the thickness that was applied. The darker spots are thicker and lighter not thick enough....

Powder by the pound is not a manufacturer, 99% of their powders are mixed in bulk I know they say they make them etc etc but really they are a mixing facility and will make their colors by mixing others (for instance their bass boat colors are translucents with metallic added) and are the same manufacturers that EW (along with caswell and hundreds of others) gets, they just specialize in dormant and flake powders more than EW does. I use PBP and EW and Caswell and all of their wrinkle blacks match dead on, all of their chromes match dead on, all of their satins match dead on. There's only like 3 actual powder manufacturers. Dupont, Tiger Drylac, and one or two others. Note how they'll mix a custom color but you have to order a minimum of like 15 - 20 lbs. Same thing they do for their own stock, but they stock their own mixes. They also ship in the worst possible container - a plastic bag with a ziptie holding it shut. I've got like 10 orders from them completely ruined due to moisture.

Yes, sun gold metallic needs to be cleared. All metallic powders need to be cleared or they oxidize within hours. Hence the creation of single stage metallic (for instance single stage chrome) which has clear built in. If you do not clear a metallic it'll lose its metallic and change color in short notice. I've even said "screw that" to all the warning on the labels with metallic orange, dormant orange, metallic copper, xtreme chrome, argent silver, etc. and it bit me, which is why that oil filter housing in my picture posted was being stripped ;) Definitely don't get non-cleared metallic powder wet. It'll turn a silver/chrome to a flat dull grey in minutes.

Nope - the issue was that the powder was cured with clear prematurely. You essentially cannot lay powder on too thick - it won't statically cling. Some people like to shoot their base and then shoot their clear with the item hot. Some people try to do that without maintaining the temperature of the item. The result is what you see in the OP. Notice how out of 4 wheels it gets progressively worse and worse. That's because the hotter wheels were done first while the more correct looking wheels had cooled.
