Just wanted to see what temps are most of you guys are running, S/C or turbo'ed...
my cooling is all done every single part of it.. mishimoto rad, steward pump, aluminum pulley, samco hoses etc etc.... needle stays right on the middle never moves and my other gauge stays at 190ish and when i go harder goes to around 210-15 max..
anyways just wanted to know

am in that area too... however what about when you step on it and push it harder?

From what I can recall from logs it doesn't go over 200F if coming from 185-190.

thats good stuff... i know you have lots of experience with FI but do turbo'ed cars or S/C generate more heat?

Heat is a function of power production so really either can make a lot of heat. A turbo is a hot item along with the piping and exhaust manifold so it can make ambient heat and a hotter operating environment for the engine, but how hot the engine gets under power is a function of how much power it is producing and the cooling systems ability to shed the heat.

I have read that normal Oil Teperature should not go about 200 to be effective. After all my Mods on a 70 Day in Seattle I am at 190 however the minute I get on it now pushing 500+rwhp oil will be 200 and stay there. However in traffic stop and go, i have been at 250 and water temp goes over middle by 10 degrees. I have stock radiator. At this point I smell oil burning and stressing like hell whether my built engine is going to explode lol. I have euro oil cooler but is this not enough? Should we not try and keep our oil temp under most conditions below the 200 mark? Has everyone upgrade their radiator for those that are pusing more than 400 rwhp?

BMW's and rotaries put lots of heat into the oil.
If your oil temps getting high enough you can smell it, chances are your breaking down your oil!
Get a fan on your oil cooler, possibly relocate for better airflow?
Get in contact with your oil manufacturer and find out the working temp range for your oil - they should be able to advise what temp it starts to break down at as well.
EDIT-- I have just thrown an email off to Penrite asking about oil operating temps for their oils (as thats what my mates and myself run) Ill report back once i get a reply

Turbo 6 cylinder with stock 6 cylinder radiator. Temp pick up in upper rad hose.
Normal driving/idling temp hovers around 198 degrees.
Even after 3 straight 1/4 mile runs in about 15 minutes, temp topped out at 208.

I am on aluminum rad, 176 thermostat, stock water pump. Around town about 180-200. Pushing it on the track I have been up to 220 and had to back off on the straights to keep it in check. Oil temp max I have seen is 180 with an oil cooler. 180 is on the track. Around town is about 140-150. I'm not happy with how the water temp is. I figure my radiator is big enough to be able to hold 176 no matter what. If you find a fix that would be great. I'm pushing 6-8 psi until this is taken care of.

I would definitely call that hot. IIRC the stock temp gauge doesn't even move until ~230*F

Subject: Oil operating tempreture
Hello.
Im trying to find some information about the operating temperature range of your engine oils.
I am a long time customer (It was infact a family friend and penrite distributor that got me onto it)
Given that most of my mates are running penrite in their rotaries (some are pushing over 500hp) and quite a few guys are running it in their BMW's (500+ hp with aftermarket turbos)
What is the recomended temp range for your HPR line of oils? and at what temp do they start to break down and become in effective?
I have seen engine oil temps pushing 240-250*F, and from my understanding oils would start breaking down and become ineffective at this temperature?
Thanks for your help, Travis
Travis,
Thanks for your inquiry.
Yes, our HPR oils will handle these temperatures. The type of base oils we use are excellent and part of their specification testing is a viscosity test at 100C. The temperatures you are quoting equate to around 120C. The key is to use the correct oil as per application and manufacturer's specifications.

I logged mine last season and I rarely saw over 190 degrees at Road America. I have a Fluidyne radiator, stewart pump, setrab oil cooler, aftercooler, and ceramic coated valves, pistons and headers. I also use watter wetter or the royal purple alternative in the radiator.
Road America has a lot of long straights though so it really gets the chance to cool down.

I run 180-185 F water cruising around town. Oil generally the same temp, around 180 F cruise unless I've been driving for a really long time in traffic and then I've seen it up to 195 F oil. Water stays below 190 F unless I've been idling for quite awhile in traffic in which case It'll creep to 200 F. (As soon as I get moving again though above ~30 mph, the temp will plummet back to 180-185 F as the stock mechanical fan does its job)
On track at H2R and MSR, water temp has never gone above 198 F. Oil peak has been 220 F on track.
For cooling I run:
-S54 rad
-stock mechanical fan and shroud
-no aux fan
-80 C thermostat
-alum thermo housing (obviously..)
-motion motorsports underpanel
-mix of BMW coolant and distilled water
-mishimoto universal oil cooler with Rallyroad.net oil cooler cap
-stewart water pump
Using Mobil 1 15w50 fwiw in the temp discussion.
Also noteworthy, I am measuring the water temperature on the hot side of the radiator in the upper radiator hose. I am measuring oil temp off the oil filter housing.

Not FI but
Water 203-206 with and without ac on, 208 max in traffic
Oil 190-210 depending on traffic and highway speed.
Bimmerworld radiator, spal 16 in straight blade 2300 cfm aux fan, 318i fan switch, 80 thermostat, stock water pump, 70/30 water/BMW coolant, 2 bottles of redline water wetter.
water sensor in the head next to the factory one
oil sensor is in the drain plug
exterior temp doesn't matter for me, could be 32F out or 105F out

So 180-200 seem to be about normal for street and track use. Why would there be such a difference between cars? Mods would be my first guess. Are aftermarket gauges that much more sensitive, or maybe placement of the sensor?

I am running cooler with a turbo and the ACM heavy duty fan clutch than I ran with a centrifugal supercharger and an electric puller fan triggered by the radiator fan switch. I did not have room for a clutch fan with an 8 rib dedicated supercharger drive system. I am planning to go back to an electric fan (to reduce parasitic drag), but this time it will be fully shrouded and controlled by a variable speed fan controlled with a sender mounted in the head or block.

Oil temp is steady at 180 to 185F in daytime temps ranging from 80-110F... When it gets down to 75F or below outside, my oil will stay just below 180F. Im running 15w-50. Front mount oil cooler is a GREAT mod.

locations/ambient temps play a huge role...

Yeah... it has been over 100 F for something like 75+ days this year. Last track event was over 100 F, and my peak temps were 198 F water, 220 F oil.

I live in LA...
TT turbo kit.
PWR aluminum radiator, spal fan, steward pump, lower thermostat.
My temps reads directly off my PLX which reads of the factory sensors off my OBD2 port so I'm guessing my readings are very accurate.
Freeway driving: I'm usually always at 183 seen as low as 180 on downhill grades.
Freeway on a hot day: high 180's
Stop and go on freeway sits around 217-219 and right around then the spal kicks in and the cycle continues.
City driving is anywhere between 199-218.

What size oil cooler are you guys using and where did you mount it?
Is the Euro oil cooler as good as an after market one or better?

I've got a 19 row oil cooler and it is mounted right behind the kindney grills. I I think the stock oil cooler would work well enough.

24v e30 turbo making 570whp.
stock radiator with mechanical fan.
stock radiator hoses.
metal impellar water pump.
165 degree thermostat.
On my way to bimmerfest across the desert, temps never even reached the middle hash mark on the guage. Always stays between 1st mark and the 2nd.
Nothig fancy here, just functions.
