I have seen where a lot fo folks put these on (Some hate this :D) and while looking at them I wondered do they break away like the factory E36 mirrors ?

As for real oem M mirrors, they pop off the base if hit hard. don't know if that's the same as the flag mirrors...I'm running oem M mirrors on both of mine.

@OP
Yes, they are very easy to steal... but I prefer my standard mirrors they suit the car more to me as they are square (notice new oem mirrors look like e36) and you can see MUCH MORE than the tiny m ones!

The M mirrors are pure classic's. Yes they are tiny compared to the normal ones, but sufficient.
They do break away, but must be hit really hard. And when they go, the only thing keeping it from falling to the ground is the wiring loom.
PS: no such thing as M3 mirrors. They are M mirrors and also available for non M3 cars. So don't let people telling anyone he/she is a wannabee M3 driver, as there is nothing M3 specific about these mirrors.

They are indeed very tiny. I have the original M ones on my M3 and to be honest I would like to have the bigger square ones from the normal version, especially as I often change between my M3 and my E32 750 with large (maybe not so nice looking but more practical) square mirrors.
M mirrors look nice, but not so practical in daily driving.
