I bought a 2011 135i a few weeks ago and it had 16000 miles. Today I was borrowing my friends pump because my tire pressure was low. He commented that the rear tires looked pretty bald. To me, the tread looked shallower than the ones i had on my previous E46 but I expected that cause this is a more sporty and higher performance car. Is it feasible that the tred is so worn I would need new tires after 16K miles? What is the metric i use to measure the level of wear on the tires?

If they're the OEM runflats it's possible, they wear horribly.

runflat has nothing to do with it. The summer high performance rubber compound wears quicker. 16K miles is not out of the ordinary on a 135, esp. if you have a heavy foot. I might not even get half of that on my 328, but I heavy tons of lead in my right foot esp. off the line.

Damn, that is a shorter life than I expected for the stock tires. Anyone got any recommendations for tires that will deliver good performance and last longer (maybe 30k miles) with moderate to moderately agressive driving?
Also, only my rear tires are excessively worn. Is there any reason why it would be illadvised to only replace those? Or is it only a good idea to replace all four tires together?

Being runflats doesn't have much to do with it, but the 140 tread wear grade of the OEM RE050a tires does.
Continental DW tires are a pretty popular replacement for the runflats and have great tread life, Hankook V12s are great too. They're a little grippier than the DW, but won't last as long and some say they're a little loud.

I have had a 335 with the same run flats and you have done very well to get 16 k out of them ! I was lucky to get 10 k as the inner edges worn dramatically with still 4-6 mm across the rest of the tyre . Called bridgestone UK and they recommend to run the front at 40 and the rears at 43 psi! It worked and the tyres did ware better ( longer ) but still worn the inner edges !
Had laser tracked and still the same outcome

Is it a camber issue because I am noticing excessive wear on the inside edges of my tires as well? I have the sport package and 19 inch wheels with OEM Bridgestone Potenza run flats.

BMWs run pretty noticeable negative camber in the rear from the factory.
