Morning,

My wife and I are looking to purchase a Mini Cooper S Convertible (told to avoid the non S models with the CVT), 2006+ with less than 75k miles on it, automatic.

We have a few options that we've looked at but the two we've test driven already have a hard vibration at idle.

I was wondering if that is a problem across the board or if it is something that can be dealt with and how. My 2006 325i had a similar issue that lessened when they did some tweaking with the on board computer.

Thanks for the advice.

Is the vibration engine related, i.e. are the RPMS fluctuating? Or does it seem to be beyond general rough idle?

I have not seen much around the forums about vibration at idle. My first two thoughts are it could be a bad motor mount, which is a common problem that can lead to increased vibration, or bad spark plugs.

If the car you want to buy have the vibration, I would highly recommend a pre-purchase inspection and I'd bring the problem up to the mechanic so s/he can diagnose it.

RPMS didn't fluctuate in either car and the vibration lessened while driving. Only while at a stop did it come back. Figured it might be the age 2006 or so and it was just in need of a good once over by a reputable mechanic.

My good friend and MINI tech works at Vista MINI. just down the road from you. i'd have him look at it whether it was one of their cars or a private sale. Ask for Greg Brown. he is the man.

Yes have a tech check them out before you buy, and don't buy a CVT car.

I do notice that the AT trans S cars do vibrate more at idle, and even more when they are a cabrio because the body has more flex. But still a good idea to have it checked.
